Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was wrongfully deported to El Salvador and then returned to the United States last week, has pleaded not guilty to human smuggling charges at his arraignment. Federal prosecutors say he was involved in the domestic transport of thousands of non-U.S. citizens from Mexico and Central America, including children. They also claim that he is a flight risk, and that his alleged MS-13 ties put him at risk of attempting to obstruct justice or intimidate potential witnesses, and are asking for him to continue to be held in custody pending trial. His attorneys say that arguments for a detention hearing are meritless, that he is not a flight risk, and that the government's "baseless gang-affiliation allegations" do not support a finding that he poses a "serious risk" of obstructive behavior. Brad Bondi, brother of U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi, was roundly defeated in his attempt to lead Washington, D.C.'s local bar association.
