This week's Linux and FOSS news:

LINUX NEWS

KDE Plasma going Wayland only:
blogs.kde.org/2025/11/26/going
("Wayland is the future" whether we like it or not. I've been testing Wayland on GNOME 48 in the past few days, it seems mostly ok so far, the only issue is that sometimes some right click context menus are flickering (although this isn't as common either as it used to be 1-2 years earlier), and the workspace switching animation is a bit delayed on my external screen compared to the laptop screen, but at the same time, floating panels in Kdenlive are better handled on Wayland than on X11 (especially when using the Forge extension for auto tiling), and some programs open a bit faster (which used to be in the other way earlier).)

we pushed a change to our (Ultramarine) DNF config this morning that may break DNF5 and updating graphically

if you're having issues, upgrade your system with
sudo dnf4 upgrade --refresh, make you're on version 42-15.um42 of ultramarine-release afterwards, it'll show during the upgrade, if you missed it run rpm -qa ultramarine-release to check

IF YOU DIDN'T UPDATE IN THE LAST 24HRS UPDATE NORMALLY!!!

we're sorry for the inconvenience and are working on tools to prevent incidents like this in the future

I think a lot of people in #fedora overlooked how long ago we (#ultramarinelinux and #terrapkg) first adopted #dnf5.
Fyra has adopted dnf5 since the end of 2023, and we have discovered and resolved quite a variety of issues with it, big and small.

What a journey.

The latest kernels (starting from at least 6.16.4) could make your system unbootable. If you have updated, select the kernel right above the rescue kernel to boot up your system instead. In any case, it is recommended to pin the version of the kernel for now. For me the last known good version is 6.16.3.

If your computer immediately shuts itself down, it's most likely this issue.

Also, this happens with any kernels, even CachyOS.

TL;DR

sudo dnf versionlock add kernel-core

If your computer does not boot with any of the kernels, you'll need to boot into a usb drive with any linux distros (e.g. our installation media), mount and chroot into the faulty system, then run sudo dnf downgrade 'kernel-*'. If you do NOT have any kernel versions lower or equal to 6.16.3, you should also downgrade your kernels. If you have found any faulty kernel versions lower than 6.16.4, please report to us. Expect a blog post in the coming hours with more information.

If you need any support, please reply to this post or feel free to reach out to us with the provided links here -

While I really like GNOME and its focused approach and environment, I can't help but enjoy KDE as much if not more with its customization options.

Figured I'd change my desktop layout for a change and came with GNOMEsque / macOS / Win11 inspired one in about 5/10 minutes. The top bar only appears if the mouse hovers over it, making the desktop in general very minimalistic.

The only problem comes with maximized windows, sometimes the top bar comes up if I want to close a window, for instance. Still trying to find a solution for that.

What are your favorite desktop environments and why?

The switcheroo went well. The #macbook is running well and fully functional (webcam and wifi) on #OpenSUSE #Slowroll.

The #Ebox is running fantastically well on #UltramarineLinux.

So overall, it has been a pretty good night. Oh, and I switched the kiddo's lappy over to #Cinnamon. He likes a more Windows 10 setup.

Now with the #ebox running #UltraMarineLinux, it is running smoother and faster than the previous #distros that I have tested out. I was even able to get some more point and click Steam games to work than before. Here is a lil theming I did.

I think I might to a #distro switcharoo and move #OpenSuse #Slowroll onto the #macbook and move #UltraMarineLinux to the #ebox.

I wanna test out Slowroll on a bit more ā€œbeefierā€ cpu.

More updates! I reinstalled #UltraMarineLinux this time doing manual partitions. Now I have more than plenty of boot space for all the kernel mods I need to make the #MacBook fully functional. Oh and I added 8gigs to swap.

Wifi works and so does the camera.

Hopefully this fixes all the issues I have been running into. The default 1 gig boot drive (not efi) was just not enough space. With a 500gig drive I have more than enough space to share, especially since I will not be gaming on this guy.

On other #PC news: The macbook has been updated from #UltraMarineLinux 41 to 42 with minimal effort.

Hopefully I wont run into #kernelpanic issues like last time. I think part of the problem was installing the kernel mod that installed the drivers for the webcam.
