Today, the scene that prompted me to dig out some old photos of tiny early Unimogs for the previous few posts. When I returned to my car at Tesco the other day, I discovered that someone had parked a magnificent Implement Carrier Unimog U530 next to it. These modern versions are enormous! BTW there’s another one with a box body in the background of one of the photos.
Today, another older (1986) Unimog, perhaps another 406, but there are so many different versions, I’m not entirely sure. This one was for sale in the outdoor area at Retro Classics Stuttgart in 2016. Although this is bigger than the original Unimog, note how the later silver model to the left towers over it. Paint colour similar to that traditionally used on German police vehicles, so perhaps ex-Bundesgrenzschutz or something (just a guess).
More Unimog today. This is the 406 variant produced for several decades from 1963. The 406 was a larger, heavier duty vehicle than the original Unimog, and the two families of trucks were made and sold alongside each other for a time. I snapped this 1979 example at Techno Classica Essen in 2013.
We’re staying in the practical zone today with this pair of early Unimogs. The Unimog, one of the most respected families of cross-country vehicles, originated with Boehringer in 1948, but was adopted by Daimler-Benz in 1951. The Unimog with the red grille was at Techno Classica Essen in 2014, while the ex-military vehicle, from 1954, was at the same event in 2022. More Mogs tomorrow. In the meantime, note how compact these early examples are.
