Have you received our "Openfactory Internet Unwrapped"?

no?

Then your mail provider maybe didn't like the ****hub.com url in the top 10 websites?

at least that's we heard from some of our users.

Huh. There's a little Masto Unwrapped thing on my other account (DuncanMSussexPol@toot.community).

I'm not sure my posting is particularly interesting but it's quite nice to see. Apparently people liked my sharing a George Monbiot (someone I'm not always on the same page with!) opinion piece the most.

Do we have this on mas.to too?

What's one better than the "2025 wrapped/unwrapped/whatever" summaries from all your apps & website logins?

Receiving the email telling you there is one, but then finding that the link in it takes you to a payment page with the message that "2025 wrapped only available to paid subscribers"

It's that time of year again when I get to admire my music CD collection and reflect on the fact that I have never used Spotify

LOL Spotify, the shitty company which exploits artists, is peeved that it's users are collectively selling they're listening history to train somebody else's A.I. despite Spotify's best efforts to trap users in a walled garden and sabotage data portability.

The world is so unfair isn't it Spotify?

The first of a new year seems like a good day to assemble, aggregate, summarize and publish various year in review posts for the prior year.

When various online services create a year in review for you many weeks before the end of the year (whether #Spotify #Unwrapped or #Strava #YearInSport), it seems they are short-changing you.

No one asks for an 11 months in review (except HR departments, which is a different problem).

So why do people accept only an ~11 months summary when services provide such a premature “year” in review?

When people say things like “Make every day count” do they not also believe you should “Count every day”?

In this case, 2024 had 366 days. You should count every one of them, and every thing from every one of them.

Rather than “sharing” a premature year in review, request your “year in review” today on the 1st of the year from various services, extract the data you want, fill in any gaps, and post your year in reviews on your own site¹.

You know how we're seeing all those #UnWrapped posts from various platforms - LinkedIn, Spotify, even Mastodon - that use #data to summarise your posts or tastes or engagements with the platform?

I'd like to see a tool that does some sort of data harvesting unwrapped - e.g.

▶️ We harvested all of your sleep data and sold it for $xx to a health insurance provider, along with the gender and weight information you gave us. It's not our fault if they increase your premiums, you fat tired woman who snores!

▶️ We harvested all the natural language data you used in your posts, tokenized it and performed sentiment analysis, so now we can infer whether you're happy or depressed, and target advertising which exploits those weaknesses 🎉

▶️ We recorded all the utterances you spoke to your voice assistant, and now we can tell the exact period when you had a cold, or bronchitis, or COVID, and we've sold that to bossware companies who will rate you on how many sick days you're likely to take. They're good buddies with the folks we sold your sleep data to!

▶️ In the platform that you use every day for work, we harvested all your click data so that we can build a profile of how someone in your job role operates, and then try to automate it to replace you, you feeble, fallible, rest-needing, expensive meat sack.

▶️ I give up these are too easy, unfortunately

Merry data-mas.
