Part of the defunct Bethlehem Steel works, idle now for thirty years, that I think was part of the process used to clean the gases used to fuel one of the blast furnaces to which it is attached, but not part of the photograph. There is a large pipe on the left angled downward through which the gas flowed . To the right are two towers at the tops of which are large components that look like upside down buckets. Below those, are a number of hexagonal platforms spaced at intervals and supported by tall cylindrical poles. A stairway leads to the bottom platform closest to the foreground. Everything is made of metal. Sunlight and shadows fall upon the structure that stands starkly against the background sky.

“In der Innenstadt” / In the city center

I’m not sure what the “center” of New York is. The actual geographical center of NYC is a random street in Brooklyn. Central Park is in the middle of Manhattan, and others may think of Times Square or Grand Central Terminal. But for me, the heart of the city is its public library.
