Amateur radio is a deadly hobby, you learn loads, meet great people, and that first contact feels like magic.
Big thanks to South Dublin Radio for hosting the 2m net and being so welcoming and encouraging.
Made a very half-hearted attempt at the VHF contest. Made two contacts on 2m, one CW and the other SSB. I could hear others, but my 5 watts and rubber duck antenna weren't getting out well competing with the big guns.

If you have a #qrz1 Explorer HT and programmed it with CHIRP and it does a weird thing where it's receiving a signal from a repeater but it will not break the squelch, I found a workaround that should at least fix the issue for some of the repeaters:
In CHIRP go to View -> Show Extra Fields
In your saved QRZ-1 config find the affected repeater(s)
Change the Optional Signaling option to OFF
Save the config and upload it to the radio
Do I want one of these? YES.
But as far as I can tell, they're strictly illegal in the United States, as there is zero allowance for even ultra-low-power #VHF and #UHF signal broadcast without a license.
Am I missing something here or are all the USians using one of these just playing with fire til the #feds knock down their door and raid their #homelab?
Today was a sunny day with sub-freezing temperatures. Anyway, I went to #POTA park #DE0493, a small hill in the outskirts of Berlin and played with my FT-818 and HB9CV antenna.
In the Berlin area there is every year a 2 m activity between Christmas and New Year's eve. Today was also a contest in Czechia. The propagation was very good. I made 18 contacts in 1½ hours with a maximum distance of 359 km. That was a lot of fun!

Second try, HF amateur radio nets
Bought new in 1987. Still going strong. If this radio could tell stories of what it’s seen… It was my dad’s radio. It was his primary mobile radio in his 1977 F-100 and later in his 1989 F-150. It went with him to work and it had a clip on the boat when we went out on the local lake. So many great memories. #AmateurRadio #VHF #HamRadio
I participated today for 2½ hours in the #IARU #VHF #Marconi #CW #Contest and made 16 contacts. Conditions were not great and most contacts were between 200 and 300 km.
Rig was as usual for short VHF operations the FT-818 and an HB9CV antenna.

Well that was an absolute blast. Played radio with @DafyddJack from some high ground in north east Wales this afternoon. Worked Germany (multiple times), The Netherlands and France on #2m #SSB, 30-50w TX power and a 3 element SOTAbeam.
