2023 Visual Novel of the Year: Seventh Lair. With the disclaimer that I am a House in Fata Morgana fan, Seventh Lair somehow managed to be a mixture of JRPG affectionate parody, isekai, and Fata Morgana reused sprites, yet a fresh and sincere story about indie game dev and the parasocial nature with the players. As expected per Novect title, everything about it just perfectly makes sense in the context of an utterly messed up cast.

Finished Seventh Lair. Keika Hanada. You really are something.

This is a quick non-spoilery note: it's quick because almost anything can be said about it will spoil it.

It's um. An isekai. About being an indie game maker. It then got a bit meta. Filled with sprites from Fata Morgana. And like Fata Morgana, it's almost a European skin put on a deeply Japanese game, with the exception of one important European cultural setting that I will leave in the spoilers post.

I now changed my mind on finishing Fata Morgana first, as I think it will give a different feel to this title, but ultimately the AU are so parallel that you can't spoil Fata Morgana via Seventh Lair. Ok ok Michel and Giselle were soulmates in both (functionally), Yukimasa and Pauline were soulmates in both (dysfunctionally); but otherwise it's more like using the same actors/sprites for completely different roles.

I love how Imeon was promoted into a main cast. I always wanted the 1099 Michel and Imeon to be bff.

Um. Turned out it's an April Fool's prolonged joke, and I'm seriously honestly super enjoying it. Hanada † Keika has proven to be a writer of massive range: I did not expect him to also excel at comedy.

I love it a lot more than Reincarnation. Reincarnation is too much of an uncanny valley title, where it wasn't serious enough for Fata Morgana but too serious as a joke spin off. This, this is outrageously perfect.
