#VanillaOS

2025-05-26

If you need or want #steamos today, i don't reccomend getting the recovery image and hoping it works, rather just use #bazzite , it's a community maintained operating system that is very batteries included for whatever you want or need today. SteamOS itself I don't know why you would need it specifically,
if it's for #arch then install arch or #endeavouros ,
if you need an immutable and stable system, #universalblue and #VanillaOS have you covered.
If you need a preconfigured OS that has everything you need out of the box, bazzite is a great option.
If you only trust valve, and valve is the only thing you would trust if you are ever gonna use linux, valve sponsers #archlinux , helping with infrastructure as chosen by the project itself.
#Linux is a vast ecosystem that span across different projects for different reasons and methods, and #valve is a great force that helped pushed it to where it is now in terms of how mainstream it is. Linux is already here as a desktop and even to be used as a console OS. If its not working or perfect for you, thats fine, just know that to figure it out, just try it out, even in a usb boot, its not perfect, but it does suite some people better than others.

Here is why I favor #vanillaos over #archlinux: with #arch, my update duration is ever increasing. #VanillaOS lets me keep a base of slow-moving programs together with some bleeding-edge programs that I get from the integrated arch subsystem. Add to that that the base system can be configured via vib in a manner similar to #nixos, and you have imo the best operating system of 2025. #linux

Damn, I love GNOME's screenshot tool.

A FastFetch reading for my computer.

I considered trying Vanilla OS again tonight, but it still won't boot the live ISO and there are abandoned issues on GitHub relating to it. I think I'm gonna look into rolling my own Silverblue instead.

There are five types of users who may try Linux instead of Windows, one a couple of distros for each one of them.

1. Complete newbies: ZorinOS
2. Students and office workers: VanillaOS
3. Windows refugees: Mint
4. Content creators: Mint, Fedora Workstation
5. Programmers: Universal Blue (Fedora Atomic)

Go ahead, change my mind.

Hey community, I ask of you all yet again. I wanna know some fun, chaotic, weird, random Linux distros.

For now I've got , , , , , , & on a quick Google search.

It's been almost 2 years since I touched NixOS so might as well play around with it again.

I'll start googling up some more & I'm also gonna be looking on later but I gotta go eat my midnight snacks, lol.

Again, no / . That's for laters!

I'm going to give VanillaOS a try on a Surface Go. 🤞

had a "soft" new years resolution (for 2024) of doing something about the aging Linux distro on my secondary laptop. Waited for the 363th day to actually do something about it...

now it's running @vanillaos ! (for now)

Hey @gamingonlinux, ever heard from #VanillaOS? It popped up on my timeline yesterday and I am intrigued.

Switched from #fedora to #VanillaOS. A little rough around the edges but it’s installed and working.

…except that I can’t access my backup drive. On my computer. That I have. In my house. It says I don’t have permission.

When I try to give myself permission to access my thing that I own, it just says “permission denied”.

Welp, I'm back to installing a "light" distro on an old tablet with an Atom x5-Z830 (Cherry Trail).

The chip is relatively old for today standards, and 2GB of RAM doesn't help too much. requires 4GB so there is that.

The purpose is to demo some HTML pages with the touchscreen. This is not negotiable.

Do you think Fedora Budgie Atomic will work on this little machine?

What’s your distro for computer newbies?

Those who don’t know what a byte is and just recently started writing on a keyboard.

Has anyone tested ?

Seems to be the best thing after shenanigans for new users, but still seems far from or for power users.

I'll still recommending to users migrating from , though, but VanillaOS seems like a good alternative for "My first computer" approaches.

You're not forced to "upgrade" from anytime, but if you think it's a good opportunity to do it:

- No budget? Slap , , or
- Small budget or Windows-exclusive software? Any will do
- Budgeted? , or
