Two interesting #ABC #podcasts, for those interested in #LGBTQIA+ matters, &/or specifically #Trans matters.

Re the 2nd one, i felt conflicted.

Pros:

  • correctly gave the historical context of the term #transgender as an umbrella category, which IMO has been badly lost / obfuscated / purloined in more recent times
  • correctly acknowledged that this is only an act of public defiance for some in this community [like them], whereas for others it's born of desperation, & for others it's a question of authenticity

Cons:

  • unfortunately defined or alluded to "the transgender experience" as a subset of "sexual minorities". I am contemptuous of this error every time i hear it. The entire point of #GenderIdentity is the fact that one's sex, sexuality, & GI are discrete separate items. They are not synonyms. My several decades of #GenderDysphoria, leading ultimately to professional diagnosis & my own internal recognition & acceptance of my #transsexuality, which in turn lead to a decision to #transition, had nothing whatsoever to do with sexuality. It was a necessary journey to validate & affirm my correct gender, which had zero to do with who i wanted to shag [that, btw, is instead a question of sexuality, a different matter, ffs]. It's frustrating enough when #Vanillas make this error, but really galling when those "on the inside" also do this falsehood.
  • their insistence on delineating "transgender experience" as a preferential definitional / categorisation device, in lieu of "transgender identity", lacked logic & lived experience IMO. They argued their term better included those who are not "transgender" but are "gender non-conforming". Oh bullshit. Oh crap. Oh steaming donkey doos. There's a bloody reason why the latter are not the former; they're simply different things altogether, damnit. I'd expect a malevolent #Vanilla to try this rubbish on, but not an "insider".
  • more than once the expression "gender deviance" was used. I mean, ffs, come on!!! 🤦‍♀️
  • late in the podcast they said "seeking gender-nonconforming life for trans people", which i didn't properly notice on my initial listen. Having now heard it clearly on my repeat listen, i feel it probably confirms a growing suspicion i'd had earlier in the interview, that the interviewee might have been coming from, & only talking about, the #transfem or maybe even #crossdressing portion of the spectrum, but excluding the #transsexual part of the #transgender family. For me, & 100% of the dozens of other women fellow-travellers when we pursued our transitions 20 years ago, the objective was absolutely NOT "seeking gender-nonconforming life", coz bloody hell that had been our curse since birth; instead we were actively "seeking gender-conforming life", as the women we are, but had been born wrong. This omission / blind spot of this speaker does not invalidate their perspective at all, but listeners should clearly grasp they are absolutely not speaking for the entire TG family, only part of it.
