3 years of trying, and I have finally grown a Broad Bean!

Planting them out earlier and earlier trying to beat the blackfly was a mug's game apparently, the wise grower leaves it late so they don't start shooting until the blackfly predators are out.

Popped some gardening content on TikTok and not a sausage. Not sure how you get things moving there but here's a link.

Bed preparation for the new season in the #NoDig #VegPatch

I harvested the last parsnips, celeriac and carrots, raked the beds over and covered with a few cm of green waste compost from the council (certified for organic horticulture).

The new miditunnel was planted with garlic, lettuce, peashoots and pak choi.
Because the tunnel is made really cheaply, I wanted to call it cheap tunnel. My wife insisted that I should use the term "miditunnel" instead as it is in size between my tunnel greenhouse and last years minitunnels.

The original design of the tunnel wouldn't last a week in our climate. So I re-enforced the construction massively. Mostly I used stuff from last year's minitunnel.

Need to get a few things more ready as I have to get some minor surgery done this week. After that, there may be a #gardening pause for a few days or weeks. ☹️

Last of the early summer poppies. Following Monty Don’s recommendation on Gardener’s World, I’ve cut this year's flowering shoots down to the ground. Monty promised more flowers late in the year. Let’s see 🌺

An early morning visit to the allotment today, picking flowers and weeding the asparagus bed. Getting better at spider identification is on my to-do list, I was certainly foxed by this one.

Bumblebean. These white tailed bumbles seem to love the bean flowers

An early start at the allotment, sowing Mediana spinach. A small handful of chicken manure pellets should encourage good leaf growth later on in the season. I’ve found the seed dispenser invaluable - so much so I’ve just ordered another one.

Field to plate or should I say allotment to salad. The real stars were the cucumber flavoured borage flowers , but there were half a dozen other herbs in the mix.

Ben Hope blackcurrants from a couple of bushes planted 4 years ago. I picked 2 kg yesterday, 2 x2kg today, and will (rain permitting) do the same again tomorrow.

47 pods harvested from the #KelvedonWonder #PeaPlants #today. 5 more left on the stems to fatten up a bit more.

Not bad for seeds planted in half of our square metre patch.

I've learnt that the plants preferred it at the front of the #VegPatch and on the side next to the path, so next year I'll plant accordingly to try to get more pods.

Now to shell and freeze them until the courgettes are ready so we can have risotto.

7 a.m. Sunday morning and this year the 🍓 crop has produced double digit kilos of fruit from a small bed. The hot dry weather is bringing fruiting to a rapid end - I'm predicting we’ll be picking the last of the strawberries soon. The backdrop sound to last night - all night - was an ‘illegal’ rave on Woodbury Common and the bass beat carried for miles to the allotment this morning.

The bumblebees were busy foraging for poppy pollen this morning as they have been for the last couple of weeks.

We’ve been picking the four varieties of strawberries for a few weeks now. As for the other berries, we’re a few days' sunshine away.

Nearly ready to pick fruit at the allotment. Clockwise: Loganberries, red currants, blackcurrants, gooseberries.

Today's puny harvest. My crops from last season are so hilariously small. Couldn't feed a family of Borrowers. This year will be better, I tell you!

(However, I do think a fancy restaurant would love these. Maybe I could start a micro-veg company).

A miniscule harvest if beetroot, parsnips, mooli and turnips, all about the size of a 50p piece

A little #NewYear #gardening to start off in a good headspace. We have a #VegPatch that currently has nothing in it and is lookin super neglected. #GoodIntentions to do more with it this year.
