The allotment is looking good considering how hot and dry it has been; broad beans (Bartek) and the tall-growing peas (Alderman) are taking off nicely. (See alt text). The ridged ground is where the second early potatoes are planted but they are not through yet. They are Wilja, Nadine and Acoustic.
The onions and garlic are also on schedule (out of shot).
Heartfelt thanks to my wife, who is doing all the hard work this year due to my poor health.

A view up one side of our allotment. The broad bean plants are in the foreground and the Alderman peas on the right. They grow to 1.8 metres, hence the support structure and netting.

UK Based Question: What loam based peat-free compost are people recommending these days. Not the cheap fluffy "potting compost" crap at B&Q that is full of wood and barely retains water!

Something soil/loam based.

Few of the usual retailers spec the stuff properly!

(I am being consulted on specifying the bits to buy to put some salad planters in at work.)

Canned vegetables. Always a favorite. Cheap, easy side.

I've worked vegetable canning plants before. They can smell but no big stink like meat packing.

My kale plants from last year's planting are still alive after an Ontario winter. Although the rabbits nibbled heavily on them during the cold months, now the stems are sprouting new leaves. Will these be okay to use for salads this summer, or should I uproot them and put in fresh plants?
