Il Fatto Quotidiano: Piranha attirati con la carne: la spettacolare (e pericolosa) pesca sul Río Apure diventa virale
Nei fiumi dei Los Llanos venezuelani, lungo il Río Apure (uno dei principali affluenti del grande Orinoco), i pescatori locali utilizzano una tecnica tradizionale tanto spettacolare quanto rischiosa per catturare i piranha. Protagonista è soprattutto il Pygocentrus cariba, specie nota per l’aggressività e molto diffusa in queste acque.
La pericolosa tecnica di pesca dei piranha
Il metodo non prevede canne da pesca né reti. I pescatori salgono su lunghe canoe e, una volta raggiunto il punto prescelto, si mettono in equilibrio sui bordi stretti dell’imbarcazione, spesso a piedi nudi. In mano tengono un grosso pezzo di carne, di solito costine di manzo, che viene immerso nell’acqua senza mollare la presa. Bastano pochi secondi perché il richiamo del sangue scateni la ‘furia’ di decine di piranha che si precipitano sull’esca con una foga tale da far ‘ribollire’ l’acqua a pochi centimetri dai piedi del pescatore. Quindi il pescatore solleva il pezzo di carne, ormai coperto di piranha intenti ad addentare senza sosta che vengono riversati all’interno della canoa.
Una tecnica virale
È qui che la scena diventa ancora più rischiosa. Con i piranha che si agitano sul fondo della barchetta, il pescatore è costretto a restare in equilibrio sui bordi per evitare di mettere i piedi tra i pesci. Cadere in acqua o perdere l’equilibrio significherebbe esporsi ai morsi di un branco in piena eccitazione alimentare. L’operazione viene ripetuta più volte, e a ogni sollevamento l’imbarcazione si riempie sempre di più di acqua e pesci, appesantendosi e avvicinando pericolosamente il pescatore alla superficie del fiume. Proprio per la sua spettacolarità, questa tecnica ha iniziato a circolare ampiamente online, con diversi video diventati virali sui social. In alcune zone si è trasformata anche in una sorta di dimostrazione per i visitatori: i pescatori la mettono in scena per mostrare da vicino l’impressionante aggressività dei piranha caribe.

In the Venezuelan Llanos rivers, along the Río Apure (one of the main tributaries of the great Orinoco), local fishermen use a technique that is both spectacular and risky to catch piranha. The Pygocentrus cariba, a species known for its aggressiveness and very common in these waters, is the main protagonist.
The Dangerous Piranha Fishing Technique
The method does not involve fishing rods or nets. The fishermen climb onto long canoes and, once the chosen spot is reached, they balance on the narrow edges of the boat, often barefoot. In their hands they hold a large piece of meat, usually beef ribs, which is immersed in the water without letting go. It only takes a few seconds for the scent of blood to unleash the ‘fury’ of dozens of piranha that rush towards the bait with such eagerness that it ‘boils’ the water just a few centimeters from the fisherman’s feet. Then the fisherman lifts the piece of meat, now covered in piranha intent on continuously biting it, which are poured inside the canoe.
A Viral Technique
It’s here that the scene becomes even more risky. With the piranha swirling on the bottom of the boat, the fisherman is forced to remain balanced on the edges to avoid putting his feet among the fish. Falling into the water or losing balance would mean exposing oneself to the bites of a pack in full excitement over food. The operation is repeated several times, and with each lift the boat becomes increasingly filled with water and fish, becoming heavier and dangerously bringing the fisherman closer to the surface of the river. Because of its spectacularity, this technique has begun to circulate widely online, with several videos becoming viral on social media. In some areas it has also become a sort of demonstration for visitors: the fishermen stage it to show up close the impressive aggressiveness of the Caribbean piranha.
