Pro Publica finds "no criminal convictions for 18 of the 21 Venezuelans we identified [who were arrested in the raid]. Three of the men had been charged with offenses ranging from drug possession to battery, but in each case the charges were dropped. Another man had convictions for domestic battery and shoplifting, and a pending charge for illegal gun possession."

The administration said it had captured two “confirmed” members of Tren de Aragua. But:
"Federal prosecutors have not filed criminal charges against anyone who was arrested. Nor have they revealed any evidence showing that two immigrants arrested in the building belonged to the Tren de Aragua gang, or even provided their names."

As Pro Publica reports, on 30 September, some 300 agents from Border Patrol, the FBI and other agencies broke doors down in an apartment building in Chicago, hauled people onto the street, and arrested 37 immigrants, most of them Venezuelans.
The Trump administration immediately released a slickly produced video of the operation.

More than 252 Venezuelans expelled to El Salvador under Donald Trump’s mass deportation policy suffered systematic and prolonged torture and abuse, including sexual assault, during their detention, according to a report published on Wednesday.
The report, compiled jointly by Human Rights Watch (HRW) and Cristosal – a group investigating violations in Central America – says conditions at El Salvador’s sprawling 'terrorist continent center' (Cecot) breached the UN’s standard minimal rules for the treatment of prisoners. It cites 'inhumane prison conditions, including prolonged incommunicado detention, inadequate food' and other shortcomings.
The groups accuse the Trump administration of willful complicity in the suffering deportees endured after being flown to El Salvador in March and April, insisting that it ordered the men’s deportation while fully aware that they would be mistreated or even face threats to their lives."

#HRW & #Cristosal found similar evidence of abuse. They concluded that the #Venezuelans sent to #CECOT “were subjected to what amounts to arbitrary detention & enforced disappearance under international human rights law.”
Based on the testimonies of 40 men who were detained at #CECOT, as well as interviews with 150 other people—including lawyers & relatives in #Venezuela, #Colombia, & the US—it paints a damning picture of the abuses inflicted at CECOT.
The #Venezuelans were released in July and returned to their country of origin as part of a prisoner swap deal. Shortly after their release, 3 of the men told MJ that they faced severe #abuse.
