#VernalPools

In spring, vernal pools go from ice and snow to pools teeming with life.

This is one of my nearby ones. It’s officially certified so it’ll soon have some combo of Fairy Shrimp, Wood Frogs and breeding Spotted Salamanders… along with LOTS of other life. It’ll be a race against time for developing species as the pool will dry up in the coming weeks/months.

And I’ll be mucking about in my water boots and Magiscope, soon! 🤗

Standing on a small embankment and looking down at an angle at a large “puddle” in the woods. Most of the water is shallow, less than three inches deep, but up to six inches at its deepest. The bottom is a carpet of leaves. A gray sky is reflecting off a lot of the water with shadows of nearby trees there as well. The entire pool is approximately 40 feet by 30 feet. The same vernal pool as the first picture, except now the view is from the other side,
atop a slightly higher embankment. The shape of the pool is more obvious, that of an oval, even a human eye. Green moss can be seen at its edges. A thick dead snag tree is in the pool, completely surrounded by water. Two circular ripples can be seen in the lower left. It was not raining so this might be the movement of something living, or hunting, in the water.

Yellow carpet - Blennosperma nanum in the vernal pools in Solano County today at Jepson Prairie Preserve. One of the first flowers to start blooming in our area. I signed up to be a docent this year and I’m taking their courses and they are fantastic. #wildflowers #vernalpools

@MsMerope
I am now obsessed with #vernalpools
We have several at the meadow below our cabin and in the spring, winter and fall the frogs and tadpoles are off the charts.

Looking to see if there are USDA grants for tadpole ranching.

More #vernalPools at #phoenixPark (and 2 mallards)
Consider these “before pictures” come April or May there will hopefully be blooms where the water now lies

Instead of "what starsign are you" it's "what type of wetlands are you"

Vernal pools:
has a solid foundation
others flock to them
occasionally disappears for months at a time

intertidal marsh:
friend circle is always changing
deeply emotionally affected by trash
"did you have eggs for lunch"

bog
girl moss
will pick a venus flytrap over a bouquet any day
knows where the bodies are buried

prairie potholes
lives in the middle of nowhwere
most likely to be attacked by a goose
constantly drained and it's everyone's problem

peatland
inspires fairytale lore
has never given up on a dead plant
sequesters 25% of all soil carbon, randomly

playa
flaky in a deeply confusing way
always stopping to recharge
unpredictably salty

mangrove swamp
legs for days
hard to untangle
needs to quit their nanny gig

wet meadow

not great at letting go

Took a hike with the San Diego chapter of California Native Plant Society to Santa Rosa Plateau preserve in Riverside County, California. Many wildflowers blooming in the grasslands and oak forests. It's a beautiful place to visit. Home to a few large vernal pools, probably the rarest ecotype in California or maybe the world. Lots of Mariposa lilies in bloom. One of those increasingly rare places showing how California was, before the European invasion. A living ecosystem, not a museum. Once threatened by the red tiled roof jungle of suburbia, but saved by forward thinking people.
