šŸ The rise of the Victorian middle class reshaped society itself — born of industry, driven by ambition, and destined to define modernity. šŸ’¼

But they're now vanishing into the widening gap between rich and poor. Feudalism is rising again.

"A Holiday in Bed, Rain, Steam and Music" by Augustus Leopold Egg masterfully contrasts outdoor chaos with intimate indoor moments. The intricacies of Victorian leisure are captivating. How do you interpret the interplay between public and private life in this scene?

Random bit of today:

In the Southern United States during the 1850s, hand fans were popular accessories, particularly among women, and were not only functional but also served as a means of non-verbal communication, a practice known as "Fanology".
Let the Fan Do the Talking: Flirting in the Victorian Era
Beautiful silk fans like this were used by women to communicate with men. In an age where a woman’s behavior was highly scrutinized, a fan was a discreet means of communicating her feelings.

The day-to-day life of the average middle-class or upper-class lady was directed by rule after rule, from the time she rose in the morning until the time she went to bed at night. One of the only means of freedom of expression was through coded messages using the lost art of ā€˜fan language’.
