A reader takes umbrage at a magazine’s "laughable" 85% review of Baldur's Gate.

(PC Zone, April 1999)

#videogamehistory

BALDUR'S GATE

REVIEWED Issue 73, February SCORE 85%

What we thought

"Baldur's Gate is a very competent game which has weeks of addictive gameplay in store for those willing to spend enough time with it to appreciate its hidden depths."

What you think

"Baldur's Gate- only 85%? It is the best RPG for many a moon and a definite classic. I suspect the reviewer was either put off by the AD&D engine or the 2D graphics, but to give it a lower score than Diablo (PCZ #48, 88%) or Fallout 2 (PCZ#71, 86%), both of which are fine games, is laughable. Despite being the most ground-breaking RPG for a long time, it was given a measly two- page review, while any 3D action clone usually warrants four pages or more.

"I am slightly biased because I enjoyed the old D&D games, such as Eye Of The Beholder, but consulting the charts for Jan/Feb, it seems a lot of other people agree with me."

Steve Mounce

Over to you, Chris:

Baldur's Gate is not a classic RPG, in my opinion, because it doesn't do anything I haven't seen before. But it is, of course, an immensely enjoyable game - hence the score of 85%.

The use of AD&D rules didn't put me off in the slightest, as the 'guts' of the AD&D engine are completely transparent to those who don't wish to get involved in such intricacies - a point I made clear in my review. First-person shoot 'em ups tend to get more coverage in ZONE because they are always at the top of our readers' Most Wanted lists, and so our editorial coverage reflects that.

There were variants of the Famicom which contained a variant of the 6502 made by Rockwell instead of by Ricoh.

This lines up with the known chain of custody of chip designs, rather than the oft-repeated story of Nintendo "stealing" the 6502 from MOS Technology. #videogamehistory

From an interview with Gabe Newell shortly after the release of HL1: the games that influenced Half-Life.

(PC Gamer UK, March 1999)

#videogamehistory

At PC GAMER we play a lot of Half-Life when we should be working, but what do Valve play when Half-Life IS their work? Newell reveals: “Baldur’s Gate and Zelda 64 are the big ones right now. Thief is controversial, with some people loving it, and some people hating it, but pretty much everybody played it. And there were moments with Metal Gear Solid when that game owned our souls.”

And the games that inspired Valve to make Half-Life? “Mario 64, which is still ahead of most of the games that have tried to copy it, Ultima Underworld, Doom, Resident Evil and 10Rogue.”

The first company established solely to produce a video game was created for the Galaxy Game, the Spacewar derivative tested in late 1971.

For years the name of the company was reported as "Computer Recreations Inc", but the business plan names it Mini-Computer Applications. #videogamehistory
