I updated all the runestone pages to use proper fonts for the inscription and transliteration on VarangianBiker.com and it looks so much better now.

The Viking Age kicked off in 793 when Norwegian Vikings hit Lindisfarne, and for 250 years they raided, traded, and settled all over Europe. Their ships were legendary, and Europe wasn’t ready. But by 1066, the Viking Age faded as defenses grew and cultures blended.

It took 331 sheep and 16.55 hectares of pasture just to produce wool 🐑 for the sails and clothing... That puts Viking Age resource management into perspective! Love how @TRIVAL_Project combines archaeology with agricultural history #VikingAge #Archaeology #ExperimentalArchaeology

A presentation slide titled 'The Ladby ship c. AD 900' showing data about wool production. The slide includes three images: the Ladby ship remains, a reconstruction drawing with striped sail, and a map. A table shows that 331 sheep requiring 16.55 hectares of pasture were needed for wool for clothing, sail, and spare sail. Additional notes compare modern and Viking Age sheep farming practices

Museum Gustavianum - Uppsala University museum - have opened again after years of renovations. I scouted the exhibitions today, and took the opportunity to snap a pic of one the reasons I'm so fascinated by fabric in C-drama. It's a small silk fragment, found in a 10thC grave not far from where I live. When I did a sketch some years ago my hunch was it's purple in origin, but it might as well have been madder red. The embroideries are silver.

#Silk #VikingAge #CDrama #histodons

Picture of two Viking Age fibulas with their pearl ribbons. Under them is the textile fragments, vaguely orange brown in colour and preserved as if they were trims around the silk embroideries.

Text on the exhibition sign: Embroidered textile fragment, 10th century AD, silk, silver thread, Sweden Valsgärde boat grave 15.

Textile finds from across northern Europe suggests that women of higher status liked to decorate their clothing with fragments of embroidered silk. This indicates an extensive trade network stretching all the way to China.
