I've tricked netatalk's pap into thinking my terrible Python script is an ImageWriter II on EtherTalk, enough so that it will reasonably send a print successfully.

An actual Mac printing to it: not so much. Still some kinks somewhere.

But, progress!

A screenshot of two terminal windows showing the pap command in one window and an emulated printer in the other. Both have highlighted sections showing the same file contents on the left (originating) and right (destination).

Still casting strange Ethernet packets into the void to mimic an ImageWriter on EtherTalk. Figured out I didn't implement AARP which is why requests didn't make it back to the printer-- whoops.

We now pass netatalk's papstatus test and can pretend we have a color ribbon and sheet feeder installed if we'd like.

"sit", the modern Unix-based StuffIt archive creation tool, has been updated with a few bug fixes:

- better support for special characters, so you can include "Work ƒ" or "Project.π" or "Business®App™" and preserve those names when expanding.
- names containing a slash could not be expanded on classic Mac OS
- never overwrite an existing file; if "archive.sit" exists then create "archive-1.sit" instead, and so on.

So far, the fake ImageWriter is proving frustrating, likely because of my limited skill set.

I can get the printer to show up reliably in the Chooser, responding to NBP LkUp requests with NBP LkUp-Reply packets. But the host never sends a PAP ATP OpenConn request and eventually times out.

Admittedly, I'm missing a lot of the AppleTalk stack which might have something to do with it.

I have a hardcover copy of Inside AppleTalk on the way.

Getting a fake AppleTalk ImageWriter to show up in the Chooser took longer than it should have.

A screen shot from MacOS 9 showing EtherPeek capturing Ethernet packet data with two packets opened for inspection detailing the early stages of ImageWriter discovery. On the right is the Chooser with the AppleTalk ImageWriter selected and on the right a printer named "Soft ImageWriter" is highlighted.

Happy New Year! Can't forget the yearly KanjiTalk New Year greeting easter egg viewing on the one day of the year you can see it. 🎍

My PowerBook G3 screen hinges are very unhappy, despite operating them slow and careful and with my hands basically on the hinges rather than the top of the lid…

When faced with a box of disgustingly yellow vintage 1990s Apple shirts from my younger days, I decided to try a laundry approach making the rounds on Reddit: Spa Day, for when regular laundry can't break down the grime.

I didn't take a before picture, but these things where basically somewhere in the "almond" color. They were worn very regularly over probably 10+ years by an Iowa-based (read: high-humidity summer), sweat-prone teenager. As such, the faded printing in places mostly pre-dates the cleaning process.

After a many-hour soaking and two wash cycles, they are mostly back to white!!

So what is an Apple II worth? I see a bunch on Kleinanzeigen (German Craigslist), but most of them don’t put a price tag on and just write “to negotiate.”

Anything to know about the Europlus version?

Went to print out a calendar for January and noticed another holiday greeting waiting for me in my ImageWriter!! No idea how long that has been sat there 😃

Thanks @RonsCompVids!! Happy Holidays to you too, and thanks for all the interview and research videos you've put out this year, absolutely fantastic and important stuff!!!

Picked up that Classic Mac building bricks set off of aliexpress as a xmas present to myself. Very cute, I love the included detail of the inside of the machine, with the analog board and CRT neck bits.

But it seems my set was missing one of the "cables” for the peripherals so I had to cut the one they sent me in two, leading to the mouse cable being a bit short. I guess that's what you get for $7.

Okay, Star Trek and Macintosh nerds.

What I'm going to tell you might shake the foundation of your whole belief.

But it turned out that the Macintosh in Star Trek 4 is actually a Video rendered from IBM PC placed in a Macintosh shell. (very very simplified)

Throw away your Mac. PC it is 🙏

A silver Power Mac G4 Mirror Drive Doors tower sits on the left side of a desk next to a black and silver 5:4 Dell LCD monitor. The monitor shows Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger with a web browser open to the SpaceHey website (a modern version of the classic MySpace website) and the “About This Mac” window visible, listing Mac OS X version 10.4.11, a dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC G4 processor configuration, and 2 MB of L3 cache per processor. The wallpaper on the desktop is a tiger fur pattern, referencing the operating system codename “Tiger”. In front of the monitor is an Apple keyboard and an Apple mouse on the desk. The setup is in an unfinished basement with exposed wooden framing and pink insulation visible in the background. The lighting is low and warm, provided by a nearby desk lamp out of frame.
