MORRIS DAY
Color Of Success
1985 Canada pressing

AWWWWWWW SHEEEEIIIIITTTTTT!

The coolest motherfucker to ever walk the planet Earth, and that is FACT.

His first solo album away from The Time, and it’s a straight banger.

Good news, everybody.

Morris Day is still alive walking the Earth at 69 years old, and doing it better than all of us combined.
Still cool enough to divide by zero, and still responding “Say please” when God says “Let there be light.”

My day just got a lot better.

I hope Morris Fucking Day lives forever.

ROBERT NIGHTHAWK
Bricks In My Pillow
U.S. Compilation reissue

Friday night starting to smoke over here.

Some absolutely killer Delta blues from the great Robert Lee McCollum, one of my all time favorite #blues artists.

If anybody had the right to sing the blues, it was Hawk.

Having your first kid at SEVENTEEN in 1909 alone gives you the proper papers.
THAT son, Sam Carr, was a monster talent in his own right, turning into a renown blues drummer himself.

This compilation is note-perfect, start to finish flawless.

The title track has made it onto more of my mixes and travel playlists than I can remember, and if you can’t relate to “The Moon Is Rising” in some way, I can’t help you.

#nowplaying Thievery Corporation – It Takes A Thief

A nice collection of the duo, of course it includes the classics Lebanese Blonde and Richest Man In Babylon. Perfect for a chill Friday afternoon.

Thievery Corporation's compilation album "It Takes A Thief" playing on a Technics SL-1500C turntable. The cover shows the duo (Rob Garza and Eric Hilton) standing in front of a garage or similar, closed with a rolling shutter. They are both wearing all black and looking at the camera.

NOMEANSNO
Sex Mad
2025 U.S. reissue
Pink Opaque vinyl

Some legendary Canadian #punk all up in your face.

I’m glad they started to reissue these records again, particularly Sex Mad, my favorite.

This legendary band originated just a short 90 minute drive from where I live on Vancouver Island in the great city of Victoria, British Columbia.

This was their first OFFICIAL album of theirs, released in 1986, FOUR whole years after their self-released (and very EXPENSIVE & hard to find) album Mama.

With dark and complex song structures and biting, super-intelligent lyrics, they could be every bit as much jazz as they could punk or metal.

The guitar sound on Sex Mad is incredible, but newcomers beware of the second side. It can sound a bit tedious to new ears if you’re not fully educated in all things Wright brothers. 😂

Killer album, regardless.

DALEK I
Compass Kum'pas,
1980 UK pressing

A wonderful, forward-thinking #synthpop record from a band whose main creative force was Alan Gill, the younger brother of Gang Of Four’s Andy Gill.

Kind of hard to imagine the two Gill boys being related.
Andy was known for his jagged, angular guitar punk in GO4, while Alan lost interest in punk around ‘77, and leaned into artsy, more experimental synth music.

This band was also known as DALEK, I LOVE YOU, as the BBC objected to the band infringing on trademark characters from Dr. Who, so their label changed it without the band knowing.

Like many albums, this record was critically acclaimed, but it went NOWHERE. It has since become a bit of a cult classic, and I was very happy to find a copy on vinyl.

You can really hear Gill’s love of Kraftwerk here, and the record is produced very well.
Really good songs, man.

ORTHOTONICS
Wake Up You Must Remember
1984 U.S. pressing

A really odd, quirky, #artrock record from the land of 1984.

This is kind of all over the place.
Weird, elastic song structures, some horns here and there, with kind off #avantgarde #postpunk flourishes in a #jazz construct? I don’t know man.
It’s definitely a little left of center.

It’s the MUSIC on this record that I like the most, as the vocals can be a little off-putting at times.

This (their first full-length album) was mixed by Fred Frith; a man that was no stranger to weird #artrock himself bring a member of both Henry Cow and Art Bears.

If you have a lot of patience as a listener, and are up for an adventure, give this band a try.

🇬🇧 Echo & The Bunnymen "Heaven Up Here" – 1981

A darker, more claustrophobic leap from their debut with post-punk as atmosphere: moody, echo-drenched, and quietly feral, like a storm building inside the songs...

#nowplaying Visit Venus - Music For Space Tourism Vol. 1

I found this many years back and as is often the case, was intrigued by the cover (and then the title). Lounge-y and chill, perfect to have a coffee with, while pondering some code.

#vinyl #vinylrecords

The album "Music For Space Tourism Vol.1" by Visit Venus playing on a Technics SL-1500C turntable. The cover is some abstract retro-futuristic art/mural, in front of which, some very blurry people are walking, giving the impression of it being an exhibit at a world fair or similar venue.

VOODOO LUST
Voodoo Lust
1987 Australia pressing

I’m absolutely in love with this record.

I only just discovered this band; a meaty, garage-y #powerpop 4-piece that didn’t put out too much.
Just three 7” singles, and a pair of 12” E.P.s, of which this is one of them.

Every song on this is killer.

“Gossip” is legitimately a great song. I don’t know what their notoriety was Down Under, but that tune sounds like a fucking hit to me.

The first song on the second side, “She Be Mine” is an excellent jangly, powerpop song, and the closer “I Tried” has a lot of heart to it. Kind of a romantic pop song.

Just five great songs.
Now I need to find more of their records, cuz I’m very smitten with this.

If there’s any followers of mine from Australia that can give me any further info on them, please do.
Loving this shit.

THE FATAL FLOWERS
Johnny D. Is Back
1988 U.S. pressing

The first full-length FF album, Younger Days, still eludes me, but I do have their second.

The Netherlands loves The Fatal Flowers. They are one of the most revered Dutch bands in history, but unfortunately, they never really good break out anywhere else.

The songs on JDIB are a bit different than the ones on Younger Days, but far more accomplished when it comes to songwriting. It’s a totally refined record, and most singer/songwriter friends that I know appreciate it a great deal.

Just an excellent band who wrote great tunes.

🇬🇧 Bauhaus "Swing the Heartache: The BBC Sessions" – 1996

An essential document of Bauhaus at their sharpest. These BBC recordings strip away studio gloss and expose the band’s core: tense rhythms, skeletal guitars, and Peter Murphy’s theatrical presence...
