This is a small enchanted wood above Turville in the Chilterns. I know it is enchanted because, even though it is only a few hundred yards across, for the first half dozen times we crossed it (maybe fifteen years ago) we lost our way.

A broad expanse of field covered in a light powdering of snow. Bright, low, sunlight coming in from the right. The image is bisected horizontally midway by a distant, narrow horizon of black silhouetted hedges and trees. There are a few young leafless trees in the middle distance. The sky is bright pale blue and cloudless; darker in the top left and becoming progressively paler along the diagonal to the bottom right where it has a hue that is blue, yellow, and white, all at the same time. The snow is uneven, partly due to footprints but mainly the uneven tussocky grass under it, and the hollows are small cups of shade.

The river is running high and fast after the recent rains and snow. Such a soothing experience to walk alongside and let the music of the waters clear my mind and heart.
