Ok, so I was wrong. Turns out #Wago does a waterproof box that's now approved in the U.S. that will be PERFECT. So I'll be ordering those ;)
#Wago connectors are a great invention.
Nobody asked but I really like the WAGO (#wago ??) lever nuts for home electric switch connections.
#homeAssistant shenanigans continues. I had to cut in a deeper box due to the size of these #zooz switches, and ended up just going with a 3 gang due to all the other wires that came into the box (2 separate outlet runs also exit here).
I mostly like these switches, but I’m not crazy about the little delay that’s caused by the switch waiting to detect a double-tap, and I’m not finding a way to disable it. It’s a shame, ‘cause both #zwave and WiFi coms are really snappy.
I will die mad about the aluminum wire in this house (and hopefully not -From- it!). Fortunately I’ve seen Noalox on any re-work, and I’m being super diligent about using it as well.
I know there’s mixed feelings about #wago connectors for line voltage. I’m going to keep an eye on them, but they were a lot easier than wire nuts, as specially since I didn’t have a lot of slack to work with.
There was no way I could have crammed all this into a 2 gang box, and I’m glad I didn’t try.

So I just started a project, a #RaspberryPi #Zero2W that will read from a set of sensors through the GPIO ports.
First I tried a #DS18B20 temperature sensor. I wanted to test first before welding and the pics attached here were the solutions I could came up with. I start to love the concept of #Wago clamps, but they are expensive and quite specific to the diameters of cables and sizes.
Still, it needs a pull-up in the data pin and first I tried the internal pull-up strategy but the sensor never appears to be detected. I reworked with Wago and added the suggested resistor from power to data as an external pull-up, and it worked at first try. I am 23°C at home :cool_dog:
Next step is to weld the cables to size down. Ideally I want to later be able to "easily" add the second sensor to the same circuit.
The intention is that the RPi registers stuff, (now temperature), and sends the logs somewhere. Most likely another RPi in my home cluster, that stores the data history and should present any dashboard via a web server. Maybe just implementing an endpoint to explore the data from external tools.
Futures: GPS tracker?
TIL: The popular #Wago 221 connectors are also available in a version with green levers (instead of orange), made from more sustainable plastics. Their specs are basically the same (except for a slightly higher fire load). They seem to be about 20 % more expensive though. 🙄
#3Dprinting is so mainstream now that #Wago has a site for (community generated) accessories to their products.
Of course people using Wago products "make" something, but I find it interesting that 3D printing now seems to enter the world of regular tradespeople like electricians.

Wanna rant with me about proprietary hardware and software? This WAGO I/O Module costs over 1000 €, has a few MB of RAM and has 2×100BaseT Ethernet. Its programming software CoDeSys costs 2.5k per month. You can only use the proprietary software (and language(s)) for programming this microcontroller. Oh and btw, you need a license for the WAGO device profiles for that software, too.
You can add more I/O to the bus to the right. The modules aren't cheap either.
This is essentially the same you could do with an Arduino/ESP32/PI and I²C, but this one has more plastic around it.
Just had a great talk at #WAGO stand. #embeddedworld

Jeez, how long have #WAGO terminals existed and I hadn't come across them before? Out of Germany I assume?
Well, it's one of those "I was today years old" days for me.
Came across a 3D-printable terminal box for them, and they look really nice for a bunch of things in my future.
