Huns, I spotted my first swifts today and it's about 8495739 trillion degrees above average. I need some #rain.
Sweating it out with Joan Crawford and Walter Huston. #NowWatching Rain (1932).

Ann Vickers, a 1933 melodrama with Irene Dunne as a social reformer. There's lots of pre-code sexual content but this a movie that bludgeons us relentlessly with a social message. Amazingly it features a bad performance by Walter Huston. Avoid.

The most lurid pre-code movie genre was the lust in the jungle movie, and the sleaziest and most over-the-top of them was Kongo (1932). Sweaty and scuzzy and sleazy, a totally mad depraved movie but it’s inspired madness and it's wonderful.

Barbara Stanwyck and Walter Huston star in Anthony Mann's western The Furies (1950), a slightly noirish nicely overheated psycho-sexual-emotional melodrama. Not a perfect film but fascinating and hugely enjoyable with Stanwyck and Huston in top form.

Lewis Milestone’s tropical melodrama Rain (1932), based on a story by W. Somerset Maugham. The story of a power struggle between a prostitute (Joan Crawford) and a preacher man (Walter Huston). One of the essential pre-code movies.

The Devil and Daniel Webster (1941)
Directed by William Dieterle
Old Scratch (Walter Huston) plays the fiddle at the Harvest Dance.
Bernard Herrmann created the creepily inhuman virtuoso performance of "Pop Goes The Weasel" in this scene by merging four different individual performances by the same violinist.

MGM's The Beast of the City (1932), most hard-edged and violent of all 30s gangster movies. Based on a W. R. Burnett story. Walter Huston is chilling as the obsessed cop. Jean Harlow, unconstrained by the Production Code, sizzles as a bad girl.

Nathan Juran's Law and Order, a 1953 remake of the extraordinarily dark 1932 western of the same name, based on the W.R. Burnett novel Saint Johnson.
With Ronald Reagan in the role played by Walter Huston in the '32 film. The '53 version is OK but nowhere near as good as the original.
You should never remake a truly great movie.

Joan Crawford in Rain (1932). Her career-best performance and Rain is one of the three or four best of all the pre-code movies. A battle of wills between a prostitute and a preacher (played by Walter Huston).
Based on a story by W. Somerset Maugham.

Rain 1932
Directed by Lewis Milestone(uncredited)
A prostitute newly arrived in the South Pacific finds herself at odds with a stern missionary determined to save her soul.
Based on the 1921 short story "Miss Thompson" (later retitled "Rain") by W. Somerset Maugham. Other #movie versions of the story include a 1928 silent film titled Sadie Thompson starring Gloria Swanson, and Miss Sadie Thompson (1953), which starred Rita Hayworth.
4 westerns you need to see
Law and Order (AKA Guns A'Blazin, 1932). The bleakest of all pre-1960s westerns.
Winchester '73 (1950). James Stewart discovers his dark side.
7 Men From Now (1956). Budd Boetticher's greatest film.
No Name on the Bullet (1959). Very modern for the 50s.
