With a laptop and a car, hackers mapped unsecured networks across neighborhoods and cities, often marking finds with chalk on curbs and sidewalks.

But there was another evolution. Mapping the internet itself. Tools like Nmap and later ZMap allowed users to scan vast ranges of IP addresses, searching for live hosts, open ports, and exposed services. This wasn’t just about poking around, it was about understanding the shape of the internet, finding forgotten systems, and sometimes discovering massive vulnerabilities. Whether from a modem, a car, or a data center, the spirit remains the same: explore, map, learn.

Anyone have good hashtags for #wardriving and #datalogging ? I have been thinking about a project to really just start logging as many signals and fingerprints as possible. Ideally on a #BikeTooter friendly size. I’m mostly curious about whatever existing autonomous systems, or connected systems exist in rural areas.

I’m very much a novice at this. Any links or anything would be appreciated.

Hab mir ne WLAN Antenne und n USB gps Modul gekauft um auf oldschool #wardriving zu betreiben nur um festzustellen das die Sachen nur windows 64bit Treiber haben und mein Laptop natürlich arm64 ist und Windows es nicht wagt Treiber zu emulieren. Hab's jetzt an den raspberry pi geklemmt, da funktioniert's einfach. Jetzt weiß ich immer wo mein Zuhause ist, lol.

Did some #wardriving last week - Mostly just my Android device but when on the road trip I had #kismet running with my WiFi Coconut. Moving up slowly!

You dang kids have no idea how easy you have it with integrated WIFI on your iPad and phones!! In my day we had #PCMCIA cards on our 10lbs laptops!!! (Actually my first WIFI was a PCI card for my desktop.)

I was digging through my tech junk drawer looking for my Pebble charging cable and found this. This thing brings back the memories. I use to do a ton of #wardriving . I never accessed an AP but did scan for them. I legit drove around the twin cities to the point that back in day of 2003, I collected 4,401 AP's with GPS details. Today? That isn't even a 5 mile radius. But in 2003. It was a lot.

@kampf I got _the_ best tip from the #wifydra builder... "Your driving too slow"... I have been doing all my #wardriving at 15mph as that's the best speed for the phone, so no wonder the numbers are close.
