Had a nice couple of days down in #Weymouth, despite the rain. Lots to see in this picturesque seaside town. The Nothe Fort was the highlight of the trip. A Napoleon III-era Palmerston fortress, it saw action in WWII as an anti-aircraft battery, and again during the Cold War as a nuclear bunker.

Had some lovely meals out too. Can highly recommend The George Inn on the harbourside, Oliveto’s overlooking the beach, and Pascal's Brasserie on Hope Square.

End of season fireworks at beach went well. Nice warm evening and a big crowd as usual. We were at the quiet end of the beach…

Seagull looking into the window of a fish & chip shop in Weymouth, 2017.

A herring gull is standing on the exterior windowsill of a shop, looking inside where people pick up their fried fish & chips orders. There's a car parked outside on a road with another building across the narrow road. A porcelain salt shaker is on the inner windowsill and some stickers in the window. The gull is white with grey wings that have black tips, pale orange feet and a yellow, hooked beak. It looks mean.

For #MeerMittwoch and during the COVID lockdown period we still managed to take a break under restrictions, spending a few days along the coast in #Weymouth where long walks with sea air was the order of business. This was when many cruise ships were anchored off shore as well. There are two in view here - both Marella ships - but Cunard and P&O also had vessels visible from the beach.

#SeaWednesday #Travel #Photography #Cruise #Beach #Dorset

We're on a beach of fine, warm-toned pebbles, with the water's edge running from the bottom right of view to a small sand bank on which there are boulders amassed four or five deep above the surface to form a protective barrier a dozen metres long that stretches from left to right at around chest height. The sea is calm and grey-green in tone and it stretches to the horizon on the right but meets low, distant cliffs in hazy silhouette to the left. Far from shore, at sea there are three ships visible. One is an unladen cargo carrier and it's passing in front of one of the other two ships, dwarfed in size by them. They are both similar-looking cruise ships and it's just possible to make out a waved pattern of dark blue and white on their hulls with some lighter blue elements elsewhere, including the single funnel stack that each has. There are some patchy areas of blue sky in the clouds that are brightly lit by the sun to the right but carry the threat of rain in their dark masses to the left and above.

The Fore River Bridge, a vertical lift bridge, in the raised position, photographed from Buck Hill.

I have been up on Buck Hill a lot during the past two years, and yet yesterday was the first time that I have seen the Fore River Bridge in the raised position. I am sure those stuck in traffic did not enjoy this, but for me it was a rare treat.

The trail up was frozen over hard, very uneven terrain from the previous footsteps through the snow. It wasn't too cold, but wind gusts of 40mph and very turbulent air made for poor photography conditions. After photographing a couple of targets, I decided to pack things up. I brought along my camcorder to get some shots for a short film I am working on. That's when I noticed the bridge. I quickly ran back to get all the gear, setup as quick as I could, without extending the tripod, and got down on my knees in the ice and snow and managed to capture some images. Shortly after I started shooting, the bridge began to be lowered, so I just made it! The air turbulence is quite noticeable, but at least I got the shot!
