🇺🇸: The white wagtail (Motacilla alba) is a songbird species from the family of stilts and pipits. In Central Europe, the white wagtail is a widespread and common breeding bird. Originally probably mainly associated with bare river banks and bodies of water, it can now be found everywhere in open and semi-open cultivated landscapes where there are suitable nesting opportunities and free ground areas for foraging. The white wagtail is a slender, long-legged songbird with a long tail that is constantly bobbing. Of the 16.5–19 cm body length, around 9 cm is the tail. The weight is around 25 g.

🇩🇪: Die Bachstelze (Motacilla alba) ist eine Singvogelart aus der Familie der Stelzen und Pieper. In Mitteleuropa ist die Bachstelze ein verbreiteter und häufiger Brutvogel. Ursprünglich wohl vor allem an unbewachsene Uferflächen und Gewässer gebunden, ist sie heute überall in der offenen und halboffenen Kulturlandschaft zu finden, wo es passende Nistgelegenheiten und freie Bodenflächen zur Nahrungssuche gibt. Die Bachstelze ist ein schlanker, recht hochbeiniger Singvogel mit einem langen Schwanz, der sich beständig in wippender Bewegung befindet. Von den 16,5–19 cm Körperlänge entfallen etwa 9 cm auf den Schwanz. Das Gewicht liegt bei etwa 25 g.

Part Four – Birds of the Kampina

Arriving in the Kampina before sunrise, the blue hour bathed the landscape in soft tones. My first encounter was with the Wood Lark (Lullula arborea, boomleeuwerik), its melodic song carrying across the quiet heath. A short while later, the cheerful Eurasian Blue Tit (Cyanistes caeruleus, pimpelmees) appeared, flitting among the branches with bursts of energy.

A new sighting for me came in the form of the White Wagtail (Motacilla alba, witte kwikstaart), its sleek black, white, and grey plumage standing out against the morning grass as it bobbed its tail in that characteristic rhythm.

Then, in the golden morning light, a magnificent Eurasian Spoonbill (Platalea leucorodia, lepelaar*) soared overhead—its long neck and spoon-shaped bill unmistakable as it glided silently across the sky.

The Eurasian Blue Tit returned in later moments, sometimes pausing to watch me, sometimes diving from the tree canopy with wings spread wide, briefly illuminated by the rising sun—a small flash of living color against the still-waking world.

These mornings remind me why I rise so early. Each species, familiar or new, carries its own story, and together they form the living heartbeat of the Kampina. From the whisper of wings to the bright calls through the mist, it’s a place that rewards patience, presence, and curiosity.

A hot day on the coast of the Baltic Sea: tansies, purple loose-strifes, white wagtails and a great cormorant taking a nap. I think cormorants are in need of a PR campaign. People don't like them here. After I had taken a few photos of the big black bird, a passerby even said to me that they hoped no more cormorants would arrive there.

It's frustrating.

Sure, cormorants eat fish but their impact on the fish population is negligible. Sure, their colonies kill a few trees but how many trees does the Finnish logging industry cut down each year? Yeah, cormorants are not the issue. Besides, their droppings are fertilizers for other plants. They are not an invasive species – they lived here earlier until we hunted them to extinction. They have natural predators: white-tailed eagles. Yep, we killed almost all of them too. Sure, cormorants might be "ugly" and "annoying" but they don't deserve to be culled because of that.

🌍🌏 White wagtail (Motacilla alba)

The white wagtail is a small and slender bird, with distinctive grey, black, and white plumage. Its most recognizable feature is its long, constantly wagging tail. It has a vast distribution, breeding across Europe, Asia, and parts of North Africa, with some populations in Alaska. While resident in milder areas, many northern populations are migratory, wintering in Africa and southern Asia. White wagtails are highly active and often found in open areas, frequently near water or human habitation. I have been somewhat disappointed with my recent photos, so I have not been interested in picking up my camera for a while. But today I showed those thoughts (and myself) the door and went for a walk. I'm glad I did! Look who I found almost immediately running back and forth on a path :) The white wagtail cheered me up quite a lot and I started to "see" photos again: buildings, birdwatchers, lesser spotted woodpeckers, common mergansers, fresh bird cherry leaves, bumblebee queens and so on.
