Under heavy smoke conditions, everyone is at risk regardless of their health or age.

However, some are at higher risk of health problems when exposed to #WildfireSmoke. πŸ”₯ πŸ’¨

"Did you know?
Infants and young children face special risks from wildfire smoke for several reasons. In very young children, their lungs, brains and other organs are still developing and may be sensitive.
Children also have smaller lungs than adults, breathe more quickly, and are usually more active than adults, especially outdoors."

The climate crisis has brought #cleanair into the public eye, with disasters bringing noxious elements into the air.

How do you keep yourself safe when #COVID19 and #wildfiresmoke make both indoor and outdoor air hazardous? Read our blog to find out!

airsupportproject.com/indoor-a

β€œA Dual Disaster Plan: COVID-19 and Wildfire Smoke”

Adjust HVAC Settings: Upgrade to MERV-13 filters; set HVAC to ON mode; recirculate indoor air.

Add HEPA Purifiers and CR-Boxes: filter wildfire smoke and SARS-CoV-2

Safe Indoor Spaces: designate a smoke-free room and a separate COVID-19 isolation room; avoid outdoor ventilation; mask in common areas.

Activities: avoid outdoor activity; change masks and clothing; choose indoor low-risk activities like board games, movies, phone or video calls.

Respirators: use N95, KF94, or KN95 outdoors and with non-household or exposed members; pediatric sizes available for ages 2 and up.

Ventilate When Air Quality Improves: when the Air Quality Index shows safe levels, open windows or use mechanical ventilation.

Prepare Ahead: stock N95 respirators, MERV-13 HVAC filters, and portable filtration devices; consult a healthcare provider about COVID-19 medications and emergency symptoms.

"Did you know?

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) represents the main health risk from wildfire smoke. It can infiltrate the lungs and cross the blood-brain barrier.

PM2.5 particles are not visible to the human eye and can cause a wide range of health effects."

@Bentley

The #AQHI a fundamentally useless scale for #wildfires.

Earlier this week, someone with actual science behind them broke down why and how the AHQI isn't fit for #WildfireSmoke conditions.

Radio personality Ruby Rhod of The Fifth Element shortly before he responds to the question "Green?" with "Supergreen!" whilst being held by the neck by a displeased live on-air guest.

Ruby stares intently towards the camera after just arriving on-scene. He has white hair upswept into a cylindrical bun just above his forehead, a lowcut, skintight animal-print suit with a tall collar that is almost off-the-shoulder, wearing a silver pendant on a choker and a headset with a red light nwar his mouth indicating his radio feed is live. Between his left index finger and thumb he delicately holds a sceptre with an ornate tip. The pattern on the body of the sceptre matches Ruby's suit.

Stay safe out there, Edmonton! Please wear a mask on your commutes today, with at least a PM2.5 filter!

Especially those on bikes, scooters, or walking (including transit) but not only those using active transportation. Autos get air from outside, too!

This wildfire season is like none other, and they keep getting worse. Of course due to climate change, but we all need to adapt to new norms to keep ourselves healthy and protected.

I keep seeing too many step out of their pickup trucks and SUVs with that telltale dry cough that indicates they've breathed in too much wildfire smoke. Your cars are not airtight (or better not be!) and worse yet if you leave your fresh vents open in this weather then you're dumping it all into a stale box with little air movement. That illusion of safety can make people reckless and take more risks.

There's a reason why air quality in carshares was a major concern during the pandemic.

Wildfire smoke can infiltrate homes through standard ventilation, making it hard to breathe inside your own home! Learn how to protect yourself by creating a smoke-free space!

Infographic – β€œHow to create a wildfire-smoke-free space.” β€’ Pick a roomy bedroom/living room for everyone (and pets). β€’ Close and seal windows/doors; use exhaust fans briefly. β€’ Set HVAC fan to ON; upgrade to MERV-13 (or highest compatible) filters. β€’ Run a correctly sized portable air cleaner (or DIY Corsi-Rosenthal Box) on high. β€’ Plan WFH/online school & entertainment; avoid smoking, candles, cooking. β€’ If smoke gets in or you go outside, wear a well-fitting N95/wildfire respirator. β€’ When outdoor AQI is safe, open windows or use mechanical ventilation to exchange air.

my local paper publishes a weather report and there is zero mention of air quality. This feels irresponsible.

So who's coming up with the innovation that's going to allow me to drink my coffee on the porch without getting a headache from the #wildfiresmoke ?

Today's AQI beats yesterday's, which was "hide inside near the air purifier," but it's still not "sit on the porch" good.

We all could burn less fossil fuel, of course. Anyone? Anyone?
