A small songbird sits perched on a brown branch, seen in clear detail and taking up most of the frame. The bird has a smooth, rounded body with soft, fluffy feathers. Its head, back, and upper chest are a deep charcoal-gray, while its lower belly is snowy white, giving it a very clean, sharply divided two-tone appearance. The beak is pale pink and short, shaped like a tiny wedge, and its dark, shiny eye reflects the light, making the bird look alert and gentle. Its wings are tucked neatly along its sides, showing subtle streaks of gray and muted brown. The background is softly blurred in warm tan and gold tones, making the bird and branch stand out clearly and giving the image a calm, quiet feeling.

A pileated woodpecker with its wings spread wide, takes off from the tree it has been hanging from. The pileated is the largest woodpecker in our forest and its black and white wings and red crest are always such a pleasure to see.

When the weather is mild, the bluebird rule is: Only one bird at a time in the feeder. One bluebird approaches the feeder on the wing while another leaves in a hurry.

A gray tufted titmouse leaves the birdbath after taking a drink. These small birds are here year round. They are speedy and this is one of the few pictures I have captured of a titmouse on the wing.

A small downy woodpecker rushes to the feeder. We have several pairs of downy woodpeckers in our yard and they are here year round. They are very speedy and it is unusual for me to capture one in flight.

A White-winged Dove (Zenaida asiatica) was standing on a Virginia Creeper (Parthenocissus quinquefolia) vine in Norman, Oklahoma, United States on November 16, 2025. The bird seemed to me to be trying to decide whether I was a dangerous human or the human that feeds birds, to flee or not to flee. Long ago, there were none of this species this far north, but they have been expanding their range.
