I see a lot in the Papers about this 20th or Child Labor Amendment, and I have been asked how I stand on that. Today in Labor History August 15, 1935: Will Rogers and Wiley Post were killed after their aircraft developed engine problems during takeoff in Barrow, Alaska. Will Rogers was a Native American vaudeville performer, actor, and humorous social commentator. He was a Cherokee, born in the Indian Territory (now part of Oklahoma). During his life, he made 71 films (50 silent films and 21 "talkies"), and wrote over 4,000 nationally syndicated newspaper columns. By the mid-1930s, he was one of the highest paid of Hollywood film stars. In 1928 he ran for president on the Anti-Bunk ticket. When asked what farmers need, he said "He needs a punch in the jaw if he believes that either of the parties cares a damn about him after the election." His father had owned two slaves and fought on the side of the Confederacy and became a Cherokee leader and attorney. His mother’s family had been expelled from Georgia and survived the Trail of Tears march to Oklahoma.
