It was an important and significant Finnish city until #Russia invaded and annexed it during the #WinterWar and #ContinuationWar (during #WW2).

#TodayInHistory The Battle of Raate Road ends in a massive defeat for the Red Army,during the Winter War in 1940, against the much smaller Finnish army, in what was a classic David vs Goliath scenario.
It was the Soviet Union's own Vietnam, where a much smaller, under prepared, under armed opponent, managed to hold it's own, and even rout them in some key battles.
