A little #ForestFloor vignette from yesterday afternoon. There is no fresh green here, yet, though Aspen and Willow catkins are bursting out and should soon be flowering, leaves and non-woody plants will follow..

A fallen bit of birch trunk, a hand's width or less, crosses the frame from side to side in the top half. It has become completely covered in the small multiply branching 'fronds' of a pale blue-green lichen. The surface is dusted with reddish fallen spruce needles and bits of golden green moss have taken hold as well, including one spreading clump near the centre top. Below, in front centre is a small rosette of wintergreen, it's several deep green slightly purple-red limned leaves- clearly last year's, not fresh- are highlighted against the pale lichen. The wintergreen leaves rise from a layer of faded grey-brown poplar leaves from last year, wet between from recent snow melt and rain.

I believe the plant species is striped wintergreen (Chimaphila maculata) or at least something in that genus

Some more lichens among the pine needles. Also present: partridgeberry leaves and berries (Mitchella repens) and wintergreen (Gaultheria procumbens).

A whole microcosm of tiny lichens on a fallen branch, with evergreen partridgeberry leaves lying over them and shiny wintergreen growing nearby too. Bright orange-brown pine needles are also lying all around.

"#wintergreens are partial #mycoheterotrophs, which means that they have an alternative to #photosynthesis for acquiring their energy to grow. They can parasitically take sugars and minerals from #fungus in woodland #soils. This ability is likely part of why they are so challenging to propagate in captivity. There have also been suggestions that the presence of specific #fungi is necessary for the tiny seeds to germinate."

This photo was taken not long after a heavy rain shower so the leaves are covered in drops of water. The flower is a small white flower with 7 petals. There are little dots of yellow from the pollen covered stamen.

The name "Upper Shamokin Falls" always makes me laugh. I'm sure its origins are Native American, but "Shamokin" always sounds like an old-timey insult. "Hey Moe, get a load'a this shamokin! He says we ain't gonna use horses no more!"
