Today's conquest
– pondering the solution for the surface treatment on my new design for serving platters. The blank came from the old elm found in the rectory garden in Hjartdal back in 2021, this blank is from planks cut by my good friend Zacharias in Svartdal.
The inside of the serving dish is coated with food-safe beeswax oil. The rim is stained white, the underside is stained black, both transparent, both with silver embellishment. In a few days, these exterior surfaces will be polished with Microcrystalline wax.

En diger alm ligger nedover på bakken i en lid. Nærmest er stammen delt i biter med motorsag. Du ser den tydelig mørk brune kjerneveden og den lyse yteveden. Den store stammen nedover ble senere dratt opp og skjært til plank.

A wooden plate held on fingertips. The wood has distinctive grain and stress patterns.

I was sure this piece wasn't going to survive drying because it had a crack on the rim - the whole chunk of log I turned it from was checked and cracked like crazy. But luckily, the wood dried so it ovaled in a way that compressed the crack, so I think it might have a chance to survive!

The little vase I’ve been working on for the past two weeks is getting closer to done. I’ve got five coats of clear enamel on the base now. One or two more yet today so I can glue the base to the vase tomorrow and then a few more coats and done. #WoodWorking #finishing #WoodTurning

A bowl I dare say is a magnificent bowl. Like «once upon a time», when such objects had significance, when you had to show off with gold and glitter the higher in status you had become – on absolutely necessary things like a bowl.

Her en som som vel fortjener å bli kalt en praktbolle. Som den gang i virkelig gamle tider da slike gjenstander hadde en betydning. Det var da folk måtte flotte seg med gull og glitter jo høyere i status man var kommet, anlagt på helt nødvendige gjenstander som en bolle.

Four breakfast bowls in Aspen this time, from timber I harvested in Hadeland about ten years ago, when I lived there at Persbråten. Aspen is not as boring white as many people think.

Salad bowl infused with food-safe beeswax oil. Light birch. It is turned thin from a raw blank and has thus acquired its final shape during the drying process. It went well this time.

Salatbolle innsatt med matsikker bivoksolje. Lys bjerk. Den er dreid tynn fra et rått emne og har dermed fått sin endelige form i løpet av tørkeprosessen. Den gikk bra denne gang.

I haven’t had much time in the shop this year, for reasons, but I’ve gotten a few sessions lately. Turned this bowl from some Russian olive I got from friends. The wood fought me most of the way, but I think the end result came out well. The bowl is about 8-9 inches (20+ cm) in diameter, mostly turned on the lathe, with a hand-carved rim. #WoodTurning #WoodWorking #Bowl

Three more bowls from hornbeam. Turning is mental therapy for me. There's a lot going on. Turning requires focus, critical thinking, creativity and imagination. In the end though, everything ends up round.

Well that worked. Not bad for 75 quid. Hopefully those pieces survive, they're buried in boxes of their own shavings but it's still about 2 chances in 3 I think.

Have reached the part of the project where I’m thinking I should strip the existing finish, go back and grain-fill the wood, and finish it again. But I’m also thinking a couple more coats of shellac, wax, and oil will get a decent surface. #woodworking #finishing #woodturning

Here are two bowls from #hornbeam. I got the wood when #Saanich cut a dozen trees because they were wrecking the sewer system on a street.

Hornbeam is a nice wood to turn, most of the time. It has a dense smooth grain. In these pieces though were knots with the growth happening at some contrary angle to the rest and I couldn't cut those parts smoothly. I did a lot of sanding there.

The wood is very pale when cut green. This wood has been stored for five years.

When I made the henafafl[1] set as a gift and our fruit bowl [2] I had to be creative because I didn't have a lathe. I'm not complaining here: I love and am proud of how they both turned out and enjoyed making them. But I have now rectified this no-lathe situation.

My local Lidl (supermarket) was selling their Parkside lathes for £30. Now these aren't renowned for being excellent lathes and some questioned their value at even their original £80 price tag. I reckoned that at £30 I could afford to take the punt. I'll let you know how that turns out (no pun intended) 😀

New mini lathe test. Done with a «monster blank» (for such lathe) in 15 years to dry birch from Hadeland. The blank is cut out with a diameter of 27 cm. The lathe ran nicely at 500 rpm, no need to go faster to find the jumpi’n Jack limit. A quarter of an hour including photography from first to last photo. Very, very smooth run, except that the tool rest on this mini lathe was a little too yielding as I attacked with my favourite GL4 from the Glenn Lucas series.
