Ah yes, the groundbreaking "Square Theory" 🤔, where crossword aficionados gather in a digital town square to wax poetic about intersecting words like it's the next scientific revolution. 😂 Because nothing screams innovation like a bunch of nerds in a Discord server dissecting four-letter words. 🚀🔡

🧠 What’s the best word game you’ve ever played—and why?

I’m still hooked on Wordfeud: have played for over 10-years and it never disappoints.

What’s yours? Let’s swap favorites!

Hey #WordNerds,
You know how 'unprecedented' needed a long spell in a good paddock after being absolutely flogged during the early years of the #COVID19Pandemic? (Reminder: #COVIDisNotOver)
I think the metaphorical use of 'journey' (esp. in health settings) needs a similar chance to recover.
What say you?

#AmReading: Wow, great quote from wordsmith.org, which sends out a lovely newsletter for #WordNerds like me.)

"The forest was shrinking but the trees kept voting for the axe for the axe was clever and convinced the trees that because his handle was made of wood he was one of them."

How confusing that “tear” as in “tear it up” and “tear” as in “tear-drop” are completely different words pronounced differently but spelled the same. Is there a term for this #WordNerds?

After watching the Language Jones video on making DuoLingo work (youtu.be/WXHtwQP9DnQ), I’ve been trying to return to learning Spanish. I’ll add one more bit of advice for fellow word-nerds to his excellent summary.

When learning new vocabulary, think about the derivation of the word or cognates in languages you already speak. Some are easy. For an English speaker, “la camisa” is clearly related to the English word “camisole,” and “la chaqueta” sounds very similar to the English “jacket.”

But what to do when there is no obvious cognate? Head over to wiktionary.org and look up the word there. You will see what other languages the word occurs in, and you can look at the etymology of the word in the language you are learning.

Enjoy!
