Nov 20: Today is World Philosophy Day! https://www.cute-calendar.com/45037 #WorldPhilosophyDay
We're celebrating #WorldPhilosophyDay by launching our new series #womeninethics, a collaboration with the Dept of Social Ethics, Uni of Bonn. Each week we'll share brilliant women in ethics, past & present, whose ideas deserve to be seen, beginning with Philippa Foot: https://youtube.com/shorts/6PQY3_kckr0?feature=share
Happy #WorldPhilosophyDay! I recently came across a fun paper by Kadri Vihvelin which offers an intriguing analysis of how free will might still be possible under determinism. I've written a blog post summarising her argument over here: https://andifugard.info/kadri-vihvelin-on-free-will/

âThe Ethics of Remote Warfareâ by Lily Hamourtziadou is out now.
This book raises moral questions around the use of armed drones in modern war, by exploring the nature of killing from a distance.

đ World Philosophy Day 2024: Philosophy for an Inclusive and Sustainable Future đą
As a cognitive scientist, I often find myself reflecting on how the mind shapes, and is shaped by, the world around us. On this World Philosophy Day, we are asked to consider two powerful themes: âPhilosophy for an Inclusive and Sustainable Futureâ and âBridging Social Gaps.â
Philosophy has always been the foundation of our search for meaning, ethics, and societal cohesion.
In todayâs fast-evolving world, these questions become even more pressing. How do we build a future that is both inclusive and sustainable? And how do we address the deepening divides in society, where resources, opportunities, and access to knowledge are unevenly distributed?
From my perspective in cognitive science and studying philosophy of mind, the answer lies in understanding how our minds interpret fairness, empathy, and justice is central to answering these questions. Human cognition is not just about individual thought processes but is intricately linked to the social structures we navigate and deeply intertwined with social dynamicsâour sense of community, belonging, and shared purpose. By embracing philosophical inquiry, we can gain deeper insights into how cognitive biases and societal structures and norms, impact inclusivity and sustainability.
Iâve come to appreciate how our mental frameworksâshaped by culture, experience, and cognitionâcan either bridge or deepen divides.
As we celebrate today, letâs commit to using philosophy not only as a tool for deep personal reflection but as a collective resource to guide us toward a better, more just, and more inclusive and equitable future for all.

Apparently it's #WorldPhilosophyDay. I'm reading 'An Artificial History of Natural Intelligence' by David W. Bates. It's about how the natural is in a sense only cognized via the artificial. A very dialectical approach.
