Just attended a very different book launch this evening - so great to hear all about Jackie Brown’s new updated edition of Braille on Display via The Braillists Foundation! There are so many options for all kinds of needs and this resource makes it so much clearer 🙌
Download it free of charge or with a voluntary contribution if you can afford it #bookstodon #Braille #blind #WorldSightDay

Today is World Sight Day.
C. 14 months ago my eyeball fell apart for absolutely no fucking reason.
I'd never needed glasses so thought my eyes were fine, hadn't been to the opticans in years.
Turns out, you need an optician to tell you if your eyes are actually OK.
Eye tests are free in Scotland and there are 660 opticians to choose from. Book one:

Happy #WorldSightDay!
To promote the importance of accessibility on social media, I'd like to propose a community action: When you see an image posted on your feed without alt text, instead of boosting it, or asking the person who posted it to add it, consider replying with your own description, together with the hashtag "Alt4You".
Trouble writing alt text for your own images? Tag your post with "Alt4Me", and someone will help you out!
Need more tips on how to write good alt text? Here's a quick guide!

👁️🌍 World Sight Day 2024 is on 10 October! Join us in raising awareness about blindness, vision impairment, and the importance of eye health. Early detection and regular eye check-ups can make a world of difference. Let's take action to protect our eyes!

Tomorrow is World Sight Day. Let's take the time to examine what we can do to make software more accessible.

Two days left to organize a community action!
Here's where we are today: https://mastodon.social/@AltTextHealthCheck/113271747825654702
#WorldSightDay is coming up next month, on October 10th.
Earlier this year I proposed to temporarily disable images on fediverse servers to highlight the importance of well-written alt text, an idea that was met with mostly positive response, including from the #blind and #VisuallyImpaired community.
https://stefanbohacek.com/blog/fediverse-world-sight-day-global-accessibility-awareness-day/
Well, convincing admins of big instances to get onboard with the idea is an uphill battle, as you'd expect.
So maybe something like regular folks posting descriptions of the images they'd normally upload instead of the images themselves could be a good, arguably less impactful alternative?

For sighted people with things to say about the idea of whether or not Mastodon instances disabling images for #WorldSightDay is useful activism, maybe we could start a separate thread here for that, rather than my previous toot?
#SocialCoop has been discussing whether to disable images on May 16 and October 10 for #WorldSightDay, as suggested here https://stefanbohacek.online/@stefan/112275637561897034.
One concern raised about this proposal is that it is symbolic and might not do anything to improve the lives of people with visual impairments.
I would like to hear perspectives from people with visual impairments on whether this kind of action is helpful.
(boosts welcome; please only reply if you rely on alt text)
What if we, for one day, all experienced social media without images?

In solidarity with the blind and vision-impaired community, I propose that twice a year, on the World Sight Day and the Global Accessibility Awareness Day, fediverse admins disable images on their servers to highlight the importance of writing good image descriptions.

Excellent. 🤗
We could emulate what the #WWF initiated with #EarthHour or #HoraDelPlaneta in 2007.* People jointly turn off the lights.
When many people(s) join in a visible action, it can become a beacon of hope.
Due to the fact, that #VisionImpairments impacts only a fraction of the population and, as @hspmauli@troet.cafe, pointed out today, voluntary "temperance/abstinence is always the problem,"..
