@adriabailton I’m… not good at taking breaks. Not helping is it feels like there is always something to do or must be done. Job hunting last year did a number on my ability to take breaks. #writephant

@adriabailton usually by messaging a friend and happy squealing. If I could, I’d buy a tiny affordable bottle of bubbly during such milestones for cheers. #writephant

My next book, Grace & Favour, releases on Sunday, and is a friends-to-lovers gay romance:

“Leo Sweetwater keeps three closely-guarded secrets: his affections lie with men, he's in love with his best friend, and he's been haunted since childhood by the ghosts of Hampton Court Palace. When an ill-advised fling threatens all three secrets, Leo must contend with malign forces, and not just those from beyond the veil…“

Look for it on preorder at your favourite retailer, or on #KoboPlus, #Everand and #Hoopla, and you can always ask for it at your library.

Or you can get it right now directly from me: payhip.com/b/A3P2i
And receive a bonus 2026 calendar featuring public-domain nineteenth-century artworks illustrating relevant book quotes.

Grace and Favour written in fancy font above a daguerreotype-style portrait of two men and a dog. One man is dark skinned and well dressed in a top hat, that’s love interest Cole. The other man is a bit more casually dressed, is blond, and has a stopwatch that’s main character Leo. The dog’s a big white Maremma. that’s Max. There’s the faint figure of a woman in the background. Very faint. Almost ghostly…

@adriabailton
Do I give myself a break after completing a major milestone or dive right into the next step or project? If I give yourself a break, how long?

If things have been going well, I try to dive right in. If it was a real slough, I take a break and look for a fresh approach. Unless there are deadlines involved . . .

#Writephant A4. Do you give yourself a break after completing a major milestone or dive right into the next step or project? If you give yourself a break, how long?

@adriabailton

I don't give myself breaks, per se. However, exhaustion does intervene. As does life. When a story is truly complete, there's sometimes a period of thrashing around looking for the next thing and starting writing—assuming I wasn't working on a series like I am now. Thrashing around is still not giving myself a break, per se. Mind you, my writing is often in fits and starts, so there is plenty of down time built in, so no worries, okay? I'd rather have less breaks!

#Writephant A4. Do you give yourself a break after completing a major milestone or dive right into the next step or project? If you give yourself a break, how long?

It depends on how immersed I was. Finishing the dev edits, I'm struggling to refocus. I took last and tonight (partially becuase I'm doing this and have ignored other things that need to get done.) Tomorrow night, I'm returning to another project.

For smaller things, I have my little celebration and turn right around and begin.

@adriabailton #Writephant Q4. Do you give yourself a break after completing a major milestone or dive right into the next step or project? If you give yourself a break, how long?

Dive right in, but with something different eg I’ve just published my latest book (released next Sunday), and am currently doing preliminary research for the next one. I won’t start drafting till next Monday.

It's time for the #Writephant weekly writer chat! … introduce yourself, and tell us how you're doing today. What's bringing you joy right now?

@adriabailton

I'm R.S. and I write #sf and #fantasy fiction with a #feminist #gender fiction bend to it. Today is a very blah day for me. Little energy, though interacting with the community is bringing me joy right now. I think I could use a nap, however… <yawns>

#Writephant A4. Do you give yourself a break after completing a major milestone or dive right into the next step or project? If you give yourself a break, how long?

I *should* do more breaks, I think they are helpful, but I tend to just dive into the next step, whatever it is

@adriabailton #Writephant Q3. How do you celebrate completing a major milestone for your writing projects?

Yeah…I don’t. That’s why I say I don’t really think in terms of milestones, because I don’t celebrate the end of a stage as if I’ve reached a milestone.

I don’t even celebrate publication! I used to at least acknowledge it with a little book-related gift to myself (eg a coffee mug with a book cover motif printed on it), but these days I shrug and start the next one.

(Could do better)

#Writephant A3. How do you celebrate completing a major milestone for your writing projects?

A think I developed pretty early on in this stage of my writing career was to celebrate those milestones in some way. I mentioned that I opened a bottle of Writers Tears Marsala cask whiskey and enjoyed a pour when I finished my dev edits. I also reward myself at the end of the year with prints of artwork associated with my stories.

#Writephant A3. How do you celebrate completing a major milestone for your writing projects?

@adriabailton

I've no consistent answer to that. Extra rest, maybe? Talk to people about it. Bathe in the sunshine of achievement. There's always something to do next, though. It is the stone that isn't rolling that gathers moss. Writing is a practice. It helps that I enjoy it.

@adriabailton
How do I celebrate completing a major milestone for my writing projects?

A major milestone? A nice dinner out. If we can find the time, maybe a trip into Philly or Baltimore or the equivalent for a show or a concert. I need to finish my WIP--I just picked up presale tickets for the traveling company of The Outsiders, in Philly in May. Need to earn it.
