#WritersCoffeeClub 8/1: While editing, what most clearly signals a pacing issue?
My gut.
It’s all intuitive, albeit an intuition honed by 30 years of writing professionally, usually with tight word limits. There’s no rule or formula.

#WordWeavers 8/1: Antagonist POV: What advice would you give to people 10 years younger than you?
Perriad: “Young man, at this point, 10 years younger than I is still ancient and they are no doubt set in their ways. But my advice is the same whether to someone of 7 or 70. Return to the original purpose of the Guild of Dawnsingers, and let that be the guiding principle for all.”

#PennedPossibilities 896 — What does your MC worry about the most?

Trapped working for the mob for a dozen years, you'd think she'd be worried about herself most. She's pretty apathetic about that, resigned to her fate. No. It's about all the people she's being thrown into contact with, people she likes, with whom she's making friends. Friends that care about her, which confuses her no end since she has decided she has no worth. She knows better, on all these accounts. Being acquainted, especially the mob knowing these friends know her, makes them targets (maybe hostages) that can be used to control her. They could even use that she's in the mob to blackmail the few who have elevated positions. She's poison.

She worries. A lot. She cries sometimes, even as she can't resist being with them and deludes herself it will be okay.

#PennedPossibilities 895 — Tell us about your SC’s most cherished possession.

They are not an acquisitive group†, so I'm going up the food chain to the top predator antagonist who is featured only as a cameo SC. When you can have anything and you are technologically immortal, what interests you? None of the little things. For Rainy Days, her most cherished possession is the world itself, but it's the world in a role not unlike a crippled bird. She loves it. She takes care of it. She knows it would die were she to neglect it for even a day, so she works hard to never to resent it. Instead, she actively searches for someone to replace her. Which is what makes her the perfect antagonist.

=~=~=~=~=~=~=
†The MC does have a cherished item—as does the Devil-girl in her SC role, but the latter I've talked about ad nauseam.

In the roar and the storm
the voice loses its power

The pain is never lost
and continues to strike with full force

Hope fades
and remains deeply hidden

Peace can no longer be found
to recharge one's strength

But the time for battle has come
Strength must now be found

To fight for all that
that must be fought for

Strength is then shown
whenever strength is needed

#WordWeavers 2026.01.07 — What’s your MC’s family like?

Bolt was a stubborn child. Though most day angels fledge by age 3, Bolt continued walking level ground when she was already 10. It frustrated her mother and uncle no end, as well as school flight instructors and a few paid-for flight tutors. One day, when Bolt strayed too close to a cliff—she liked to open her wings and feel the breeze lofting from below buzz through her feathers—her uncle shoved her over the edge.

Well, we know Bolt survived that. Turned into a right talented aerial athlete—with no scholastic interest, zilch, in anything save the kinesiology of training and anatomy. Nothing that could make a living. A bit of a hellion, she got into constant trouble at school, often with one muscly boy or another; yes, what you were thinking, that too. The tension between her and her family peaked after she told them she wanted to go into a blue collar trade instead college. She got disappointment from them, not an attempt to control her—something she's still dealing with today. Was it love? Was it apathy. She never grew to dislike her mother or her uncle, or her baby brother. To a degree, he took the pressure off of her to conform. It made her handle her own messes better.

When she ran from the constabulary and got caught up in the mob, one of her regrets was that she had to cut off all contact lest the mob use her family to more tightly control her. A dozen years later, during the story, it is a sore point.

#WritersCoffeeClub #WCC 2026.01.07 — Continuing from yesterday’s question, what’s gone downhill?

Pretty much jumped the gun with my reply yesterday. Discipline. Today I wrote 350 words prior to writing my replies.

So far so good.

#ScribesAndMakers 2026.01.07 — How long does it usually take you to decide if you like a piece of music?

I take notice of some music after a few bars, but it usually takes until the end of the song that I decide to add it to playlist. Sometimes it takes me listening repeatedly, and I do that, until I find it tires me or I know I'll want to listen forever. Sometimes a song is flawed enough that, though I like much of it, parts turn out to be a buzz kill. It's rare that a song grows on me enough that I decide I like it enough to care about it later. Often my change of heart has to do with the lyrics. If the words spark my interest, particularly if it is a mondegreen, I might decide I like the music after all and send it to a playlist.

At 94,000 words my second novel is complete.
Now for the second draft and some heavy editing...

#WordWeavers Jan 7. What’s your MC’s family like?

Really tight and loving. Very supportive. Her parents are "permissive" in the best ways. They *permit* their kids to do all kinds of things because they've created a safe space to explore and grow and learn, and they're confident their kids will come to them for help and support.

That reminds me:

Please tell me your preferred systems of tracking and mapping a novel!

I want to find the one that works for me, and I would be very grateful for your help!

Thank you in advance.

#WritersCoffeeClub Jan 7: Continuing from yesterday’s question, what’s gone downhill?

My ability to keep a text in my head and followup on tropes I laid down. Granted, this is my first novel, and it's proven the obvious to me: I *can't* keep a whole book in my head, so I'll need a better system for tracking and mapping it all.

#PennedPossibilities 895. Tell us about your SC’s most cherished possession.

River, my little hippie girl, was abducted at 11 years old. Her teddy bear fell out of her backpack, and she was separated from it. It's not the most prized thing she possesses, but losing it hurt a lot. She'd burst out crying if she ever got it back.

#ScribesAndMakers Jan 7: How long does it usually take you to decide if you like a piece of music?

Usually seconds. I have a low tolerance for something that doesn't work for me aesthetically. That said, very often even if I'm not concentrating on the lyrics, I'll realize that they're a huge part of what keeps me coming back to a song.

"As Doug began his descent, he was quiet for a few minutes. Inhaled the dry air. Clocked the view down the Bright Angel Trail, past the smear of green of Havasupai Gardens, the faint ribbon of trail out to Plateau Point. Beyond that, out of sight, the final plunge to the timeless Colorado River."

#WordWeavers 7/1: What’s your MC’s family like?
Jerya grew up without a real family, raised by a clutch of ‘aunts’, didn’t know who her parents were (she does now). As an adult she’s looked for the warmth of family in various ways, starting with the Guild of Dawnsingers, before finding more conventional family security at a relatively mature age.
