New video on Jason’s Pen Journey today: March 2026 Currently Inked.

I recorded this at the start of the month but ran into some audio gremlins during editing. Adobe’s audio tools helped rescue it enough to share.

In the video I walk through 26 fountain pens currently inked, along with the inks paired with each one.

#Today 13

Good day!

For the first time, I cooked spinach from the produce aisle. I haven’t been able to get it frozen for six months.

Why?

Over 90% of spinach is grown in China.

The spinach I had last night was excellent, locally grown, and cost me 5x as much.

Be everwell.

Atop a saddle of pine wood forest, tracks in the snow are the only indication of a trail. Ahead, the trail curves to the right ahead of a big drop, a mountain faintly visible through the falling snow, the sky gray.

From Bodysnatchers to the Borg and Beyond

Given the association of misfortune with this day, Friday the 13 th , I guess you could attribute it to the (bad) luck of the draw that, for the second month in a row, it’s my day up. And this time I don’t have he mitigating influence of Valentine’s Day to soften the blow.
When I was growing up in Columbus, Ohio, there was a Friday night TV show called Chiller Theater that featured horror and sci-fi flicks from just before midnight on. Friday the 13 th was usually an occasion for especially spooky fare, and yet some of the scariest movies we watched in those years were the science fiction offerings from the 1950s, when both the threat of nuclear annihilation and the Red Menace were at their peak.

I pitched my novel to a publisher.

The long and short of it: I was asked to share a few chapters, but only after another round of edits on the novel. A BIG round of edits. It's great to get the validation that my idea is a good one. Now I need to follow through!

(Note, the story is behind a subscribe wall because I share certain details, but … I shared the good news anyway. Hey! Subscribe! :)

7 Reasons We Writers Need Human Interaction

Like me, two of my sisters are also writers and editors. When we check in with each other in the morning, we’ll sometimes say, “Today I must be alone in my garret all day because I’m on deadline.” We writers often romanticize the idea of being huddled in a garret, translating our thoughts into words on the page with no one to bother us. The metaphor of “an unfinished part of a house just under the roof” suits us, even if it is cramped and drafty. Here, we can suffer for our art.

Good day!

We’re in what could be our last sorta winter storm: cold, but not cold enough for snow, at least not in the valley.

I’ll make a quick trip to the grocery store early this morning before sunrise, then walk and edit (less than 20 chapters remain).

Be everwell.

Across a field of golden grass, and beyond a line of conifers, a broad valley leads to wooded and snow laden mountains that rise dark against the gray sky.

In my continuing confusion from headlines today, I read the header of an email—"Don't submit!"—and thought, you're telling me not to send in my work for publication?
