#Today 23

Good day!

Yesterday was an eclectic assortment of tasks as I finished the scan on a novella and setup to use my editing system on Book-4.

It was also cold, the temperature uncomfortably close to freezing on my morning walk. Later today, a warming trend begins.

Be everwell.

#Today I finished the arduous process that is uploading my novel to Amazon and Ingram Spark. I'm excited to say that the ebook is available now, and print books will be available July 1. This sequel has been long in the making. If you enjoy mystery or psychological suspense, may I offer: A Vision of Violence.

Good day!

Sometimes, I look closely, see what’s right in front of me, see the fragility.

Or I’ll see the big picture, see my humility looking back.

We have meaning, but that meaning makes us caretakers, not owners. Caring for the all, that’s humanity.

Be everwell.

A withered tree tilts amidst the smaller trees around it. Beyond, an imposing slope thick with conifer forest angles down and to the left. In the distance on the left, a massive, snow-capped peak dominates all around it beneath a stormy sky.

This week's writing prompt was painted by Edmund Bristow (1787-1876). Is your story going to mention that obviously developing storm? And will the dogs interact in any way?

A landscape scene with a dark ominous sky with four small birds flying away from the clouds. At the centre of the scene, a well-dressed man on a white/grey horse is talking to a smocked farmer/shepherd. The smocked figure has a working dog sitting at his feet (it looks like a border collie) while the rider has a white greyhound-like and possible spaniel and a third shadowy dog following his horse. Amazing! Got another 5-star review on Amazon for DEBRA LEE WON'T BREAK. It's so exciting hearing what people think of my book. And this isn't even from someone I know!!!

"Creating characters so real they practically step off the page, Pickett explores family conflict and friendships lost and found—and almost lost again. Here's hoping. for a sequel!"

Debra Lee Won't Break - despite the reality of MS and the damage of family secrets
Reviewed in the United States on June 13, 2025 .Verified Purchase
It's tempting to call Debra Lee Won't Break a great summer read, given its clever plotting, brisk pacing, and summertime fundraising event that propels the narrative. But this first novel by Katherine Pickett would be a great read any time of year, even as it addresses such heavy topics as rape, disease, and death. Debra, a single mother caring for her own mother, must deal with all of these issues and—perhaps worst of all—the burden of keeping secrets from family and friends. She relocates from one US state to another, assessing her own physical and mental states as she navigates the daily challenges of MS and the triggering reminders of her hometown trauma. Creating characters so real they practically step off the page, Pickett explores family conflict and friendships lost and found—and almost lost again. Here's hoping. for a sequel!

Just finished the first draft of this novel (not my first rodeo, but still feels like I rode a wild bull). Now onto the fun part: editing! AKA staring at my masterpiece and wondering if I accidentally wrote a soap opera or a thriller. Send coffee. Lots of coffee. ā˜•ļø

Something I can't help but do as a writer is think about the "brand" of the piece I'm writing. What is the aesthetic guidepost of the work? What is the tone I'm aiming for? Can I give myself something, a trigger, an on-ramp, to help locate the tone and voice of a piece when I sit down to work on it? My newest novel project had a title card right from the jump. I thought it might be a feature film, but no - it's just going to be a rollicking, fast-moving, fun, adventurous, sexy, political, dramatic historical fiction full of crime and fisticuffs. It is far and away the most Canadian thing I've ever written. I'm deeply loving the research process and I can't wait to dig into Library & Archives records to help flesh out some of the finer details. I wrote the 1100-word prologue last night in a short sprint and I'm so excited to be back writing novels. Now to balance my focus on this with the other projects I want to pay attention to!

In rough capital letters, the name JOE is printed. The rings of a tree centre in the O, which is filled in and looks like the cut trunk of a tree. The rings emanate from the centre of the O like ripples though the other letters. Superimposed on the tree-trunk that acts at the O is the cutout shape of a broad axe.

Good day!

On the hike pictured, I only found out afterwards that there’d been mountain lion sightings.

That, though, is often a possibility around here.

Cool & rainy continues…

I could finish the scan on the novella today. The next project is editing Book-4.

Be everwell.

A narrow trail cuts across a steep, grassy slope to where a line of pine trees are waiting. The slope angles down to the left and is in the shade, but in the distance on the left, a wooded mountain is in the sun. The sky is partly cloudy.

Good day!

The weather has taken a sudden turn. It’s much cooler today & moments ago started raining.

I’m going to be grateful & enjoy it while it lasts. Soon enough, dry conditions will endure.

Meanwhile, I’ll continue the scan on Trellis House.

Be everwell.
