#Wyse

Further adventures in #cyberdeck configuration:

I've replaced the #wyse 3040 with the wyse 5070. It's a lot faster, and 8GB of storage just wasn't enough space to work with. There are also enough USB ports for peripherals.

The current configuration also has two Ethernet ports, one of which is 2.5Gb.

I'm currently theming #sway and making some progress getting it to behave like I'd want.
The amount of gorilla tape on this thing makes it look interesting. I won't be taking this to the airport.

@foone I guess people mistake them for the #ThinClients that #Dell sells under the #WYSE brand to this day and think "Let's just charge people as much as they'd be willing to pay for those..."

Even tho I too would love some #amber & #green in my room and would love to test those against @OS1337...

I've just received these m.2 to TF card adapters for the #wyse 3040

The m.2 slot on this board is intended for wifi, but used SDIO instead of USB or PCIe.

The gerber files for this design were available from Github linked from this ParkyTowers page. parkytowers.me.uk/thin/wyse/30

I'm still blown away that I can order these custom-made boards for a few dollars and have them within two weeks.

I just need to buy and solder on the card slot and two surface-mount capacitors.

Three unpopulated m2 to micro sd adapter circuit boards.

Here's the 7zip benchmark on the #wyse 3040. It does look like it's about the same as the raspberry pi 4. It still feels much faster because of the storage.

7zip performance test on the wyse 3040. Looks to be about 6000 MIPS.

I just installed Debian 12 on the #wyse 3040. Aside from the EFI boot workaround, the install was quick and everything is working well. If you're not familiar with this thin client, it's about the size of a Raspberry Pi, at least as performant, but limited to an 8GB eMMC module.

Neofetch output from the Dell Wyse 3040 thin client running Debian 12. Notable is the 2GB of RAM and quad core Atom CPU

I have the #wyse 5070 with the SFP+ port attached to the wifi slot. I found this thread on Reddit (reddit.com/r/homelab/comments/) where someone had replaced the wifi with a 2.5gbe adapter.

I bought the exact adapter for $13 off Aliexpress and it does work without additional configuration in Ubuntu 24.10. Now in typical for me fashion, I need to buy a 2.5Gb switch to see if it gets the full speed.

I was skeptical at first because it's supposed to have a CNVIO slot, but the A+E adapter is compatible.

So I am running a #Tor "farm" at home. It had consisted of 2 older #Wyse Terminals running #Ubuntu Server Minimized. One server was a #obfs4 bridge and the other was a #Snowflake proxy server.

I decided to port these machines to VMs running Ubuntu 24.04 & ran into some issues. On a whim, I decided to spin up a #Debian VM for the #obfs4 bridge last night, fully expecting to wake up to an issue this morning. I was wrong. The bridge is online & appears to be working. It was always a fight with Ubuntu, not the case with Debian.

So I spun up another Debian VM for the Snowflake proxy & it now also online and working 100%.

All hail Debian???

#Ireland-based #RetroComputing and #VintageComputing folks might be interested in a stash of #IBM, #DEC, #Wyse and other #mainframe and #minicomputer #GreenScreen #terminals, most dating from the 1980s and 1990s (without keyboards, unfortunately), as well as copious sealed #Windows95 CDs ("with USB support"), sealed 3½ inch #FloppyDisks, sealed and unsealed memory modules in the tens of megabytes range, sealed IBM branded PS/2 ball mice, vintage toner cartridges and ink ribbons. There's a single #Amstrad monitor for use with the #CPC454, an intriguing #Apricot-branded machine and some VGA-era monitors. Many of them will need work. There's a functioning #Windows98 machine.

The stash is located in a shed in the village of Rathdowney. You can contact the seller via adverts to arrange to see it: touch.adverts.ie/monitors/vint

The seller is prepared to power on devices for you. I left with only a few handfuls of floppies as I already have more DEC terminals than I need.

On the newly acquired #wyse 5070, 7zip decompression of 10,000 MIPS, about half the Inspiron 660s I've been using for the last 8 years or so.

But for power consumption, there's no comparison. The #TDP of the i7-2600 is 95W, the Celeron J4105 is 10W.

This old Dell has been a workhorse, but I can see now that I'm paying more for electricity than it's worth.

The #wyse 5070 booted and ran for a few minutes with the new Haiku beta. Then it did a kernel dump.

But for those few minutes it ran very quickly.

Moving on to installing Ubuntu server on the machine, the 16GB m.2 sata drives came in handy. I installed the minimum installation + ssh server and have about 11GB to spare. It's hard to believe that's considered a light installation these days. It was so minimal that there was no vim or htop. The onboard Ethernet pins are bent and not working.
