For 2/1/25 I made a character using #XCrawlClassics The game just arrived at my home after their Kickstarter so I had to try. Mike Truk is a level 0 adventurer with very high strength. Not at all agile though, but otherwise pretty average. The farming life just wasn't interesting enough for him. #challenge2025

Playing #XCrawlClassics for the first time.

어제 했던 엑스크롤클래식(Xcrawl Classics, XCC)에서 맘에 들었던 것 중 하나는 캐릭터 설정에서 "우리 파티가 엄청 유명해져서 우리 파티에 관한 영화가 만들어질 때, 내 캐릭터는 어느 배우가 연기하겠는가"를 정할 수 있다는 점이다. XCC의 세계관이 대충 우리 실제 세계의 평행우주 버전이라서 가능한 이야기.

테일즈 프롬 더 루프(Tales from the Loop, 테플루)에서도 비슷하게 (이 룰은 넷플 미드 "기묘한 이야기"처럼 뭔가 이상한 일이 일어나는 80년대 세계관) 내 캐릭터가 가장 좋아하는 노래를 캐릭터 시트에 기록하도록 되어있다. 당연히 대부분 80년대 팝송을 고른다.

둘 다 세계관이 우리 실제 세계의 또다른 버전이라는 세계관이기에 가능한 기믹인데, 상당히 맘에 드는 기믹이다. XCC에서는 캐릭터들이 엑스크롤 대회에서 좋은 성적을 내어 궁극적으로 전세계적 슈퍼스타가 되는게 기본적인 동기이고, 때문에 모든 캐릭터들이 "나 나중에 뜨면 나를 기반으로 한 영화도 나오겠지!" 하는 상상을 당연히 할법한 세계관이다. 테플루에서 캐릭터들은 평범한 삶을 살아가던 80년대의 10대 소년소녀들이기에 당시 유행곡 중 정말 소중한 애청곡이 하나 쯤은 다들 있을 것이고.

이런 캐릭터 설정을 통해서 플레이어가 갖고 있는 문화적 지식과 감성, 그리고 취향이 캐릭터와 연결되면서 캐릭터가 훨씬 더 입체적이 된다. 캐릭터 시트의 그 어떤 수치보다, 또한 백그라운드 서사를 주저리주저리 쓰는 것보다 훨씬 더 효과적으로 캐릭터를 세계관에 녹아들게 만드는 아주 멋진 기법이라고 생각한다.

Got the #XCrawlClassics PDFs today—LaSalle’s truly knocked it out of the park. Not just a campaign-specific sourcebook, it contains lots of extras to slot directly into a regular #DCCRPG game.

• 10+ new classes? Check.
• Rules for elven chain? Yep.
• Flying death piñatas? You betcha.
• Meryl Streep gritting her teeth in a life-and-death struggle with an unstoppable *something*, her anguished grunts drowned out by the roar of blood-crazed spectators? Strongly implied on page 20.

4. My most recent purchase (as of writing this) was Marzio Muscadere’s #DCCRPG adventure “The Shadows About Hope” (https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/425491/The-Shadows-About-Hope-An-Adventure-for-the-DCC-RPG). I was lucky enough to play in one of Marzio’s games earlier this year, and had so much fun I decided to see what else he’d written for DCC. Turns out I already had a lot of it. 🤷🏻‍♂️
