DiscogsDienstag: Xmal Deutschland – Schwarze Welt
Heute stelle ich das wertvollste Stück meiner Musiksammlung vor, was sowohl den Mittelwert bei Discogs (z. Zt. 132,14€) und den Anschaffungspreis (102€ bei eBay) angeht. Es handelt sich um die erste Single der Hamburger Band Xmal Deutschland, die 1980 als reine Frauenband von Anja Huwe (Gesang), Manuela Rickers (Gitarre), Fiona Sangster (Keyboard), Rita Simonsen (Bass) und Caro May (Schlagzeug) gegründet wurde. Die Single wurde 1981 beim Hamburger Independent Label Zickzack Records von Alfred Hilsberg veröffentlicht.
Auf der 7-Inch-Scheibe befinden sich drei Lieder: „Schwarze Welt“ auf der A-Seite sowie „Die Wolken“ und „Großstadtindianer“ auf der B-Seite. Obwohl außer Manuela Rickers keine der Musikerinnen Banderfahrung aufzuweisen hatte, klingen die Songs zwar minimalistisch, aber nicht dilettantisch. Durch die düsteren Lyrics und den monotonen Gesang von Anja Huwe können die Songs durchaus als Vorboten des deutschen Gothic und Darkwave bezeichnet werden, was sich in späteren Veröffentlichungen von Xmal Deutschland fortsetzt. Nach den Anfängen bei Zickzack wurde die Band 1983 vom englischen Label 4AD unter Vertrag genommen und wurde auf der Insel recht bekannt. Davon zeugen auch Konzerte und Tourneen mit The Stranglers, Cocteau Twins, Dead Can Dance, New Model Army, Red Lorry Yellow Lorry und Fields Of The Nephilim. Auch der legendäre Radio-DJ John Peel kam nicht an Xmal Deutschland vorbei und lud die Band zwischen 1982 und 1985 viermal zu seinen Peel Sessions ein.
Ich habe die Single Anfang der 2000er Jahre bei eBay ersteigert und hatte dabei einen Mitbieter aus Italien, das habe ich noch in Erinnerung. Dieser schrieb mir vor Auktionsende beim Stand von 75€ eine Nachricht „You know that you are bidding on a single?“. Was sollte ich machen, ich wollte die Scheibe unbedingt haben. Wie heute am Mittelwert bei Discogs zu sehen ist, war das durchaus keine Fehlinvestition.
Sängerin Anja Huwe hat nach 35 Jahren musikalischer Schaffenspause, in der sie sich der Malerei widmete, im vergangenen Jahr das Album Codes veröffentlicht. Gleichzeitig wurde auch von Xmal Deutschland einiges wiederveröffenltlicht, unter anderem die Compilation Early Singles (1981 – 1982), auf der auch die drei Lieder von der Debütsingle enthalten sind:
Außerdem sind im September 2024 unter dem Titel Demon Diamonds zwei Remixe der kongenialen Kieler Band No More von den Liedern „Die Wolken“ und „Schwarze Welt“ erschienen.
Xmal Deutschland ist noch immer eine der Bands, die ich zu meinen Lieblingsbands zähle, leider konnte ich sie nie live sehen. Das letzte Konzert in Hamburg fand am 25.11.1985 in der Markthalle statt, damals kannte ich sie leider noch nicht.

I finished working on the Xmal Deutschland Peel Session recordings today and have now sent all 16 tracks off to 4AD. I sorted out the last four tracks today. The quality is very good, which is fortunate, 'cos the BBC no longer have the originals. Hopefully Anja is as happy with them as I am. Fingers crossed. It's likely to be one of my favourite albums of all time, when it's finally released.
