1. Mana should have been Maria.

2. And a bunch of dots got halluncinated into random letters. Same as it ever was, back to encoded Bacon wrote Shakespeare gibberish.

Otherwise, damned decent!

@hellomiakoda For image-based stuff, I'd agree, as #Xsane is also my goto. But when I just gotta scan one or two documents at the house for something, it's simple-scan. As for work though, when I gotta scan tens or hundreds of documents and name them each individually, nothing beats a nice little script with scanimage, convert, and sqlite. Read in the info from db, select the one I need, ask for further input, output to file and mark the item in the db.

A creepy town from Dracula, illustrated by Gustav Doré, reproduced in an 1883 Art Journal article about Doré.

And what is that shadow? And is that a cat or a dog? Hands up everyone who wants to live in that town!

#vintageArt #GIMP #vintageEngraving #GIMP3 #Gimp_3 #xsane #dracular #horror #melodrama #blackAndWhite #Dore #Doré #GustavDoré #Doree

A black and white engraving. Well, mostly black. It’s night time.

Here we see two people, one with an arm raised, running across an empty courtyard: empty except for a black dog or cat running in the other direction.

All around are tall dark and foreboding buildings with steep Gothic turrets, a melodramatically creepy town!

And in the courtyard, a disturbing moon-shadow as if of a giant bird.

The Catapult, 1868, Edward Poynter.

Complete with naked Roman soldiers.

The tip of the arrow is glowing red hot in the original painting.

The book implies Poynter failed to capture movement in this piece, by focusing too much on detail. Not sure i entirely agree, what do you think?

Delenda est Carthago.

#Carthage #vintageArt #vintageEngraving #catapult #siege #romanSoldier #fobo #GIMP #xsane #GIMP3 #GImp_3 #weapons #archery

Roman soldiers, some fully clothed and some entirely naked, some shirtless, are using ther strength to turn a windlass prepare a giant catapult to fire a huge arrow (I think), with the bare-legged and barefoot man atop the steps perhaps doing the aiming. In the painting, the end of the arrow is red hot, and the man is also shirtless. Archers return fire. One soldiier sees an arrow that narrowly missed him and landed in an upright beam. The slaves mentioned in the account below are i think dimly visible at upper right in the engraving, but i don’t really see them in the painting either.

The catapult bears the inscription Delenda est Carthago, which is, Carthage must be destroyed, or, blotted out.

Picture by Tom Graham (1840-1906) engraved by the Dalziels in Good Words, for a poem “Reconciled” by English poet Jean Ingelow.

The reconciliation is between—well, that would spoil the surprise, but you can go read the poem, it won’t fit here.

Thomas was known for his careful attention to light and detail and it shows.

Black and white engraving, very detailed.
A man in a bowler hat and jacket is giving a plucked flower to a lady with a long billowing dress. They are in the garden [US: lawn or yard] of a house; in the porch we see two faces looking on.

An architectural diagram today - how to draw a gothic window. Or how to design one.

The left side shows the fully-drawn window and the right some of the construction. Not all, though, by any means, so you need some creativity here!

I bought the book at a shop near San Jose years ago - i started walking to it down El Camino Boulevard & gave up, took a taxi!

This black and white diagram of a gothic window is divided into two halves: the left, in white on black, shows the overall effect; the right, in black on white, shows also the construction lines so you can learn how to draw gothic windows for your cathedrals or churches or houses.

I checked some early photos, all the way to 1910 or so, and indeed the firemen in Constantinople were generally barefoot. It seems not an occupation well suited to bare feet!

#fobo #illustratedLondonNews #1870 #sketch #newspaperIllustration #vintageIllustration #firemen #men #barefoot #GIMP #GIMP3 #Gimp_3 #XSane

A group of barefoot men rush through busy streets at a run. They are all barefoot, and only their leader has a shirt; he also has a jacket and carries what seems to be a short ceremonial spear, and perhaps is shouting.

The men following at his heels have pumping engines perhaps a metre (a yard) on a side, on pols which they carry on their bare shoulders, for men to a pumping engine. They appear all to be running in perfect step.

This decorative initial letter J (it’s _inhabited_ because it has a person in it, _historiated_ as it illustrates a scene, and was used as a drop cap, the first line of the title starting between the piper’s feet.

Probably the rodents running around on the bowl of the J are black rats, by their shape and tails; common in Europe and carried the plague.

A dramatic decorated initial letter J at the start of a chapter, used as a dropped capital (drop cap) and also partly raised cap.

Maybe it’s a bit specialised, but this initial letter J has a piper sitting on top of it with a feather in his cap, a purse dangling with gold coins falling out from where it has been chewed by rats, and a number of rats (with short tails, presumably black rats).

Time for some cherubs and a putto or two! How many cherubs are there in the picture?

#Engraving of a frieze by Louis Tettelin (1615-1655).

Last one from this book for a while i think, although i just scanned (with #xsane) from Volume V in the same fabulous series...

#fobo #vintageArt #vintageEngraving #cherubs #GIMP #GIMP3 #Gimp_3 #baroqueArt #notAFountain

A gargoyle or grotesque head for a stone fountain with seven winged barefoot and naked boys (putti, or cherubs) being mischievous and getting into fights. Although the grotesque head here looks like a fountain spout, what actually comes out are festoons, not water, tied to rings at either end of the sculpture.

It must have been chaos in the studio, getting all these little children to be still long enough to paint them!

This is the #Barbican, a toll booth & house for the toll-keeper, in the town of #Sandwich, in #Kent. A #vintageEngraving in the style of a #pencilSketch .

Yes, this is where the 4th Earl, John Montagu, asked for his meat to be served between slices of bread so he didn’t have to get up from the gambling table to eat, back in 1762.

The book appears to be wrong about when the Barbican was built (14th, not 16th C.)

A wide arch with a roof and two circular turrets one on each side, at one end of a bridge. There are boats moored nearby, punts perhaps, and it looks like three people, maybe two men and a boy, are about to rent one. One of the turrets has a weather vane at the top.

This is from George Wharton Edwards, The Forest of Arden With Some of its Legends, New York, 1914, and by then inks didn’t fade much. But it was the four-colour process, making the pictures harder to reproduce.

I try to have colour pictures on the front page of frooldbooks.org to liven it up a bit, and so visitors see they are not all monochrome!

Scanned with #xsane, then #GIMP3 and #GMIC descreen.

Recently i wrote that Names of Angels was the 2nd most popular image on fromoldbooks.org; this is the most popular, a 19th century engraving of Sir Isaac Newton, famous for inventing the apple.

I’m actually not certain why it’s so popular - i should check!

Today i added the shirt, prints, socks... redbubble.com/shop/ap/174109620

The castle in the picture was built in 1327, long before the William de la Marck mentioned in the legend in the book. A second castle was built nearby in the 19th century, but was greatly damaged in the Second World War; the original castle was less badly damaged. It is a private residence today.

If the SANE modules still have that known bug where it spits out "FAILED TO SCAN", use the non-free vuescan to trick it into working.
Install the flatpak of it, do a preview or a scan (it puts a fucked up overlay on the scan once saved), then close it.
Run simplescan (either via flatpak or what's provided in your distro) and it should then scan without any problems.

I keep being surprised how much #linux and #kde has improved :)

I remember fighting with #xsane and weird drivers you had to get from either the vendors page (if they had any) or those someone had reverse engineered to get some form of a scanner working... and now it's truly just "plug and play".

I'm using #NAPS2 for #document #scanning on #Linux now.

One of the (German) #TuxFlash guys published a piece on YouTube …(edit) it was @LinuxGuides.

NAPS2 has a more reasonable GUI/UX than #XSane and it's got #OCR built-in!

I, for one, welcome our new #LLM overlords.

…well, within #reason 😅

#Copilot has been quite useful, despite the plentiful #hallucinations. 🤬

Before i've figured out, how to create a multi-page scan, as a PDF, using #XSane, … 😅

Yeah, using the #ImageMagick / convert tool, remains #persnickety 😅

pro tip; you need to match the DPI/resolution (close enough), in the input files, in order to produce a "good enough" output.pdf

yikes, the struggle is real 🖖 🤣 🍻

this is me, asking Copilot (incogniCopilot/incognito session), how to "convert" multi-format inputs into a PDF file

I just scanned a document using my GNU/Linux scanning software of choice: XSane.

When I started with GNU/Linux in 2000, I also used XSane.

I think it might be the same version: 0.999.

How software should work: No nonsense, options all laid out, does exactly what you tell it, no mistakes in 25 years. Even if it is clunky.

Worth a salute, I think.
