A few weeks into using YNAB, I have almost enough money in my "Bills Only” checking account to pay next month’s bills by the end of the month, and I'm not spending all of my leftover money before getting paid again. #ynab

@scy Still using #YNAB for #budgeting
Well worth the money imo, and they have a VERY generous family sharing offering
For those of you who are into #PlainTextAccounting: Which software are you using and why?
I'd like to finally start personal accounting again. I stopped when #YNAB became SaaS. YNAB's "envelope budgeting" worked really well for me, and I'd like to get back to a similar workflow. (Or, if you think you know something superior, let me know!)
I'm very open to comments and suggestions here, but it has to be open source software.
I've been using #YNAB for all my financial matters, and managing the inflow and outflow for this server already falls under that.
The goal is to provide insights into where end-user money is going, so it only made sense to hook into a system where it's already available.
I get why it looks that way, though. If I were to design it from the ground up, a simple CSV or perhaps a DB table would suffice.
I created a handy API endpoint last night for the upcoming #tootcommunity hub. It displays real-time financial information regarding the operational cost of running this instance. It's connected to #YNAB, which in turn, is connected to my bank account.
I think I'm finally getting the hang of @ff3 but boy is it different from #ynab
I know where they are coming from but I'm not fully convinced that their approach really is better.
I feel with YNAB I had a lot less surprises in my finances and saw a steady rise in my savings.
My number one recommendation for beginners so far would be to enter all your subscription as the first thing you do after you setup the accounts.
This then shows you the expected subscriptions ou have to pay for the month and shows you what you have to budget.
Then add your budgets for stuff like going out etc.
Then you try to stay under the budget and then at the end of the month or whatever you allocate the rest to your piggy banks which are linked to your savings account.
There is no "rolling with the punches" thing.

@collin you may already know about #YNAB, You Need a Budget. The software is nice, but the real important thing is their method, the rules you apply.
By having a new checking account with a fixed amount, you’re already on your way to « give every dollar a job ». The other rules are important, but rule 1 is THE rule.
If you haven’t, check their online training. It’s really good.
As seen on reddit :-D

Off course you can handle your expenses. But maybe you still want to know exactly how much you can spend TODAY.
Read on then. https://codeberg.org/miccaman/YNAB #finance #budget #YNAB
#ActualBudget is such a phenomenal self-hosted #YNAB alternative.
Today was catching up on budget stuff. I always hate spending and crunching the numbers, but it beats not knowing where I stand.
Keeping up is always the problem. #YNAB
It's taken me a while to get around to it, but I've made some updates to an old #clojure codebase I hacked together to convert CSVs from one bank to a CSV that #YNAB is able to parse. I've taken the opportunity to learn how to use clojure.tools.cli to parse commandline arguments, as well as tools.build to create an uberjar. It's not much, but it works.
Also I'm meant to be doing my taxes.
#3GoodThings
1) Got #ActualBudget working on a server now. Who needs #YNAB ?
2) Sage is bringing home takeaway Mexican food.
3) Tailwind on the way home from work today. Maintained 25+ km/hr much of the time with moderate effort. Of course I did prepay for that by riding into the same wind this morning.
(Also it's really silly but there's one cyclist I only seem to see when there's a headwind. Go figure)
1) It took probably 8-10 hours and lots of AI help but I have managed to mimic all the functions that I used in #YNAB in an Excel spreadsheet. One less US business supported. (They also were not properly importing bank data so it was less useful)
2) Delightful afternoon nap.
3) Sage made jambalaya tonight and it was amazing.
Now I'm a bit wired from all the spreadsheet work. Hopefully I can sleep soon 😄
I was making an exception for #ynab in my US business boycott but then it stopped properly importing data from my bank. I think with that in mind, I'll be heading back to spreadsheets. I really found the "Envelope-based" approach really worked well for me.
Might be a bit of a stretch for my Excel skills but we'll make it work. (Yes, I know, MS is from US but because of work I can't get away from it - Libreoffice is not an option)
Hallo @stef4n.
Excel < YNAB. #ynab
A nice side-effect of switching from #YNAB 4 to self-hosted #ActualBudget via a VPN is that it shows me if I'm not connected to #Tailscale for some reason, which I generally want to be because I use it for #NextDNS too.
Does anyone have a preferred budgeting software they use? I used to use YNAB for years, then switched to Monarch. I'm back to YNAB for 2025.
