#Yakuake

2025-06-24

Today I learned that having a #4Kmonitor and a standard #HDTV (1920×1080) in a dual-monitor setup with 150% scaling will seriously confuse #KDEPlasma. #Dolphin windows open up with weird varying font sizes and #Yakuake refuses to recognize either the size or the position settings in a sane way.

Fortunately the TV serves only as a temporary secondary display for tomorrow’s #Teams meeting, then it will go.

I kinda wish #Yakuake could have a single shortcut to flip between terminals, whether they are tabs or panes. As it is now (IIRC), you have one shortcut for flipping between tabs, and another for flipping between panes.

#KDE #Plasma

@itsfoss #zsh* on #yakuake

*) used to be #bash, but I take whatever's the system standard - doesn't really matter for my purposes

Something I miss from #Tiling wms/compositors like #i3wm and #sway when I'm on #KDE:

I use #Yakuake on KDE #Plasma to have a terminal that's easily accessible, but stays out of my way when I don't want to see it.

On tiling setups, I use disappearing windows (I forget the actual name of the feature) that will pop up when I hit super+-, appear one at a time, and then disappear.

Yakuake lets you do tiling as well within its window, but I kinda miss the ability to cycle through a bunch of windows very easily. I mean, I've got the keyboard shortcuts set up very nicely, so it's just F12 to make the window appear and disappear, and then control+tab to cycle through tabs or control+pgup/pgdown to jump between panes, but somehow the tiling setup is just a bit easier to do. Less thinking, just super+-. ;)

I don't know if I'll continue to use tiling setup too much longer, though. It's too aggravating to figure out how to get the occasional gnome program to work properly. There's always some kind of fancy library initialization that I fail to get right. It's easier to just use a DE and whittle it down to nearly tiling levels of productivity.

One thing I wish I was able to do with #iTerm2 is to configure the HotKey Window to slide down from the top right (or top left) rather than the middle. Yakuake lets you do that. I don't like my terminal to sit in the middle of my screen.

A workaround is to use the "right of screen" style, and it's not bad. Still not as flexible as Kakuake.

Yakuake doesn't fill width at 100% width

Portion of a screenshot showing Yakuake set to 100% width not reaching the left panel. The window underneath is showing through.

Das "Runter-roll-Terminal" Yakuake mag ich und nutze es häufiger. Statt F12 habe ich es daher auf Alt+Y gelegt:

@inaction_figure @pdq A couple of years ago iirc i created a #Kinoite VM in my #ArchLinux host, just to muck about with & keep an eye out. In it i created an #Arch #Distrobox, in which i installed #yay, with which i installed some #AUR pkgs. All that works fine, but there are papercuts i dislike & have not been able to overcome. One such is that so far i do not know how to have any such DB apps autostart with Kinoite itself.

Similarly, in Kinoite i've installed various #flatpak apps, one being #Yakuake. I've never managed to get it to obey my setting to show its icon in the System Tray, like is easily done in non-immutable Plasma distros.

Papercuts like these dissuade me from being able to think of #Kinoite, #Kalpa, #kdeLinux et al as serious future replacement Host distros on my hardware. However, i approach these matters as an unskilled hobbyist, not someone with deep Linux knowledge, so would appreciate relevant advice from those who actually know such stuff.

Is there a that has 's bookmarks and 's drop-down function?

I mostly just run the same handful of commands in the same two folders, so that's basically all I want.

#yakuake in #Debain 12 is driving me nuts. It keeps ignoring the the config and starting on screen 1 even though the config clearly says screen 2.

Really dig my current desktop environment:

- #KDE plasma 6 base on #nixos
- #karousel kwin script for scrolling tiled window management
- #yakuake for a drop down terminal with #nushell

Anyone runs something similar? Feels like I finally found a perfect sweet spot between productivity and freedom.

¿y ustedes?

Doing more stuff with Fedora KDE and I really got to love drop-down terminals; especially for quicker command where a seperate terminal window is not really needed all the time

And at first, I thought like "Who the actual f needs that anyways?!". Well, here I am now... :D

Lesson learned: Don't judge before you actually use something!

@WindOfChange Hi. I use two #Activities, "Main" & "Other". Each one has four #VirtualDesktops [for many years i used nine, but a couple of years ago downsized to four].

On "Main" i use my browser/s on VD1, :thunderbird: on VD2, general stuff on VD3, & my #QEMU #KVM #VMs on VD4. At times of specific short-term tasks, some of those VDs will also have other apps, eg, during internet banking VD1 will also have open my #KeePassXC & #KMyMoney... etc.

When i do updates, i rarely bother opening #Konsole, but instead use #Yakuake [which i divide into four virtual terminals].

On "Other", i do...

With February's fast-approaching #Plasma6 arrival, & its potential removal of Activities altogether afaik, i expect soon to be quietly grieving the removal of a major KDE / Plasma component that i've "used" since KDE4, without ever once discovering a compelling use-case of it for me. 😜
