🌏 Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo (Zanda funerea)

The Yellow-tailed Black Cockatoo is a large, brownish-black bird with a short crest, distinctive yellow cheek patches, and a yellow tail band. It is distributed across southeastern Australia, including Tasmania, favouring eucalypt woodlands and forests. These cockatoos are diurnal, social, and often noisy, seen in pairs or flocks. Their flight is characterized by slow, deep wingbeats, and they primarily feed on seeds and wood-boring grubs. Two to three subspecies are recognised. Gemini 3 (Edited)

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)

Fun fact: Their most distinctive sound is a high-pitched, mournful, and drawn-out "kee-ow... kee-ow" call, which is often described as sounding like a rusty gate or a wailing cry. This call can carry over long distances.

Interesting side note snippet, I put a post up just of a black cockatoo I came across and was getting the species name. The species was
Zanda funerea which was allegedly because the early settlers called it the Funeral Cockatoo which I thought was interesting. #birds #birdfacts #blackcockatoo #Zandafunerea
