I'm in the process of switching from #ZHA to #Zigbee2MQTT and I'm really impressed by how much better everything is.

I know many people say this for a while, but after years of ZHA it's surprising what I've missed. Especially for some devices that exposed much less entities to Home Assistant via ZHA.

Suddenly I have so much more data about my home that I can not only see but also use for automations. Suddenly I can control stuff about some devices that were never available via ZHA.

I'm glad that I'm also switching the Coordinator in this process as it costs an unexpected amount of time to do this, as I have to update automations, the dashboards etc.
But in this process I can clean up so much stuff I did wrong in the last months and years.

After some testing and usage of these Sonoff and Thirdreality temperature sensors, while the Thirdreality sensor was more fiddly to get running, it seems to work a bit better, is a bit more responsive to changes, and is actually configurable.

So far, I'm leaning heavily towards standardizing on the Thirdreality sensor.

Continuing my #SmartHome adventures, my #zigbee garden irrigation stuff arrived today.

Sonoff smart water valve, paired with #HomeAssistant via ZHA with no problems. Gets treated as a switch, and there’s a flow rate sensor so you can set an automation to turn it off after a given amount of water has gone through the valve if you want.

Also got a little inline filter and pressure regulator. The water is coming from the pond, so that’s important!

Just need to figure out the connection from the waterfall pump outlet now. Also need to re-jig the waterfall itself to conceal the new stuff. That’s no big deal, I wanted to try to make it taller anyway.

Ideally I’d like a rock solid way to make sure the pond doesn’t get emptied if the valve is left open for some reason. Not sure if the valve closes automatically if the power is lost, for example. I think for now I’ll just make sure I only run it while I’m there.

I got some new IKEA #Zigbee stuff. (Thanks to @emdecy for the pointer!)

Their smart plugs have got much better, much smaller than they were originally. They used to have a big bit sticking off the bottom of them which made them pretty useless in a lot of spots so I never bothered before. Paired and working with a USB dongle in #HomeAssistant no bother (once I found out how to put it pairing mode - hold the tiny button in!).

Motion sensor wasn’t quite so straightforward, had to remove and re-add it a few times. It just sat on “configuring” and created an entity which didn’t work, for some reason. Third time, all good. 🤷🏻‍♂️ It’s bigger than the old one I have cos it takes AAA batteries, but I don’t mind that really. One thing to bear in mind is they’re directional; the flat bit is the bottom, and the detection zone is angled downwards.

Also got a new media remote with extra buttons which will be handy for controlling the smart ceiling fan I bought last week. The current remote we’re using just toggles power from a smart plug, but the new fan has speed settings. I could just cycle through them, I suppose, but it’s nice to have options!

This stuff is so cheap, it’s ridiculous. The plugs were €7! Best price I found elsewhere was €22.

I've been using ser2net for a long time in various ways in my #HomeLab, mostly to ship #ZWave and #ZigBee packets around the network. Naturally, I converted that system over to #Kubernetes. The fun twist is that the ser2net container automatically builds it's own configuration from the devices present on the node.

I wrote an blog post a while back about setting up a healthy zigbee or zwave mesh, but the TL;DR about #zigbee and wifi channels is that your best choices are using wifi channels 1 or 6 with zigbee channel 24, wifi 6 or 11 with zigbee channel 11, or wifi 1 or 11 with zigbee channel 18.

Fwiw, I think I got these #Sonoff radiator valves to reliably react to OTA check requests. E: — Tried it … doesn’t work. Pulling batteries out and restarting or repairing is more reliable.

Turn the Lock Mode on (either via Z2M, or by pressing the knob for three seconds).
Then continuously spin the knob, and perform an update check. This should keep the device „active“ and react to the OTA request, without timing out the moment you click „check for update“.

Now the only thing I have to wait for is my new Zigbee stick to completely rebuild my Zigbee network. 2025.4 sadly brought some errors with ZHA that they can't find (ongoing GitHub issue) and I can't update currently, without losing half of my Zigbee Network. 😅
