Nachdem ich vor ein paar Monaten mit meinem Rechner auf Linux umgezogen bin, habe ich auch ein Weilchen gesucht. Unter Windows habe ich den Total Commander ewig genutzt. Ich habe sogar noch eine Diskette hier mit der Kauf-Version. 😆

Mein Favorit für #Linux heißt jetzt Double Commander.

Hi #Linux team - any recommendations for a work desktop computer with the following requirements:

• can do basic research stuff (reading, writing) and also a little bit of basic data analysis (with python or Matlab)
• would run a distribution like #ZorinOS or Mint

@MolemanPeter @JosetAEtzel just to add some context, do you mean is it possible to install #ZorinOS on a Mac with these specs? I'm sure it's possible... but haven't tried it myself.

Edit: as per responses below, with Apple hardware it is actually not possible to install ZorinOS 🫤

The cool thing is ZorinOS has a "macOS" theme so once installed you should be able to make it look very similar to what you're used to!

I think it's time to call my switch from #Windows to #Linux on my work desktop a success: multiple days of "just working" without substantial linux-wrestling distractions.

Context and details, if you want them: I'm a scientist, and have developed successful (windows) computer work habits over (ahem) the last 25 years. My goal was to keep my existing workflow as unchanged as possible, but without the microsoft AI intrusions and forced updates (or new hardware).

I went with the #ZorinOS 18 pro "flavor" of linux. My desktop computer was running #Win10, and could not update to 11. Hardware-wise, zorin just worked for me: no trouble at all with my dual-monitor setup, (USB) webcam, campus yubikey, or even my (beloved and trusty) #FingerWorks iGesture pad. (I attended a zoom meeting the afternoon I installed linux!)

The computer has two internal hard drives, C for the OS, D for file storage, and I mirror D for backup, travel, etc. I initially thought to dual-boot, but that did give me trouble, so I reformatted C and installed only linux, leaving D unchanged (still NTFS).

My biggest software hurdle was #OneNote, but I've now adjusted reasonably well to #Joplin. Joplin doesn't (afaik) allow the flexible spatial layouts of OneNote, so some of my converted pages are arranged wonkily, but I could pretty much keep my existing notebook structure and habits.

This is long, but perhaps useful for someone. Ask if you want even more info, about software or whatever. 😂

Ich habe gewechselt. Aber nicht, weil ich musste (Win 11 lief bereits seit Jahren auf dem PC), sondern es wollte. Weg von Microsoft. Weg von einem dieser Tech-Konzerne.
MS Office hatte ich bereits etliche Monate zuvor durch #LibreOffice ersetzt, das selbstverständlich auch unter Linux läuft.

:zorin: installed on #mindy and thus far I am very pleased with both look and feel on this #AcerSwift3 with #Ryzen4700u laptop.

Only thing I couldn't quickly sort out is the Fingerprint Password Settings app in the #zorinOS repo.

Other than that I have no problem seeing why it has become a popular choice for those with #Win10 that Microsoft gave a 🖕 to about upgrading to #Win11.

So you finally decided to quit #Microsoft Windows & move to Linux, good for you👍
It is not easy to quit Windows, it's like quitting a street drug that you never wanted to begin with.
#ZorinOS is not my first choice of a #LinuxDistro, as it does not support #KDE Plasma
but it's a start down the right path to a better computing life with the freedom of Linux & that's what matters most.

Je lui ai fourni un disque NVMe dans un boîtier externe avec GRUB et la distribution #ZorinOS (édition Core) pour qu'il puisse manipuler et ancrer ses habitudes. Après quelques config dans le BIOS, il branche l'USB pour démarrer sur Linux, il débranche pour démarrer sur son Windows 8. Prochaine étape au printemps quand il aura acheter le nouveau PC 👌

Bonjour,
Hier c'était après midi de présentation et essai de #linux à Saint-Pierre-d'Oléron.

C'est une vingtaine de personnes qui sont venues découvrir ou se renseigner et essayer "en vrai", souris en main #linuxmint et #ZorinOs sur les ordinateurs que j'ai mis à disposition pour cet événement.

Beaucoup de questions et d'échanges et surtout de réactions positives qui globalement se résumerais par "ah oui, en fait c'est simple à utiliser"

Idea: #Linux installation tutorial for #Windows users who want to try it as a dual-boot?

Say, I would live-post the steps as I am doing it on an old laptop, with #ZorinOS (I installed it once and it works fine). People could try and do it at the same time.
I am a Linux newbie but I would count on others here to provide tips if something is not working...
