La nouvelle maj de piefed est arrivée :3

Pour rappel, nous avons 2 instances francophones :
- feddit.fr : géré par @tournesol (sysadmin) et moi-meme (modération et gestion cmmu)
- tarte.nuage-libre.fr géré par @destructeurdemonde (sysadmin) et moi-même (modération + gestion commu)

PieFed c'est un forum style Reddit. Nos conversations sont rangées dans des communautés comme politique, tricot, jeux vidéo...donc si vous aimez bien les forum, n'hésitez pas à tester.

La différence avec Lemmy : on peut regroupper les commu dans des multicommu, ya des flairs, des tags...et plein d'autres choses à découvrir comme les filtres Elon et Trump proposés à l'inscription.

Faudra un peu de temps pour que les serveurs piefed passent à la v1.2

Puis ma trad française en écriture inclusive. ☺️ Reste le problème du point médian que je vais essayer de supprimer car pas accessible pour les malvoyants ou aveugles.

Pour suivre les derniers developpement de PieFed : chat.piefel.social basé Zulip qui est plus stable que Matrix et propose pas mal de fonctionnalités interessantes.

Hello there. My group has been using (free) Slack for chatting among ourselves. We are ~20 ppl in 3 locations, so chat has to work.

We want to move, but whereto? We consider #NextCloud Talk, #Mattermost, or #Zulip. We are fine with #selfhosting. It must be #opensource. We just need the chat, not integration with video or other advanced features.

Oh, interesting, looks like the #Zulip containers include the email server setup for sending and receiving emails.
So I guess "left as an exercise to the reader" is how to run multiple email servers on your infra, especially if besides this functionality for Zulip you would also want regular email server, and maybe something like #SimpleLogin
I guess it might be possible on a single IP with something accepting emails for all, and then talking to the appropriate server. Or maybe haproxy/nginx 🤔

So I recently wanted to set up a private chat service, mainly because I wanted a place to get notifications from things like alertmanager, homeassistant, et al. And at first I was looking at Zulip, which looked great, but then I realised that many communities I'm part of use matrix, and so now I have my own matrix server.

Some observations:

• Setting up synapse was easier than I expected.
• The initial client UX, especially when it comes to encryption keys is painful at first, this is something I doubt normal users will ever tolerate.
• Joining channels on other servers can be insanely slow when you haven't joined anything on that server before.
• Once it works, it's a cool and ambitious way of chatting, maybe overambitious.
• The extensibility is pretty cool, reminds me of things like bitlbee.
• It's nice to be able to join community channels of Fedora and c-base without having to have an account on their servers.

All in all, now that the initial pain is over, I enjoy it, but I never see it going mainstream with the current UX. If you want to chat, hit me up, I'm @ainmosni:ainmosni.eu
