Aaron Parks - Little Big III

Parks is back on Blue Note, and brings another strong set of tunes. Jongkuk Kim (drums) and David Ginyard Jr. (bass) provide propulsive backing, and Greg Tuohey supplies the guitar.

This, again, can’t help but remind me of Metheny/Mays material, but Parks brings his own energy and spin.

Aaron Parks - Invisible Cinema

It was nice to be able to replace my old, low-res iTunes version of this with a great new double-LP from Blue Note classics.

What to say about it? It’s definitely “modern jazz”, and while Parks is a pianist, his compositions give everyone in the group a chance to shine, with lots of melodic lines being tossed back and forth, and a good sense of dynamics.

For fans of Pat Metheny, I’d suggest.

Tonight: absolutely perfect piano trio loveliness from Aaron Parks in a killer trio with Thomas Morgan & Nasheet Waits. Their first time playing together tonight, I caught the Tuesday late set at the Vanguard. So good, here all week.
