I am not CW'ing this because this a teachable moment about a scene in #MurderBot.

At one point a married couple are talking and one says "She was crazy" and her wife only had to give her a look, and she quickly corrected herself to "She was unregulated." The show pointed out how easy it is avoid #Ableist language without even saying what they were doing. It was just a given.

(I may be using the wrong pronouns. I haven't figured out if one of the wives uses they/them. I do not remember it being in the books. It is only mentioned like twice and I only have hearing in one ear and AppleTV uses some totally different sound quality that I have to have it turned up all the way just to hear what they are saying (and then of course the music in the intro still manages to boom boom boom, on like every show on Apple TV). With Paramount+ I can have it turned down 4 or 5 notches and still hear just fine)

@BrodieOnLinux @qdot I find it weird to see #FLOSS #devs use an #InformationBlackhole like #discord which combines all the disadvantages of #MailingList, #IRC, #XMPP, #Matrix and even #MicrosoftTeams and #Signal without any redeeming qualities of any of those, like a functioning search & logging.

• Like the #LKML is kinda shit in terms of UX but at least there are searchable indexes for it so one can just point at a specific message & comment wthout having to be granted access to it.

Not to mention that discord is #ableist af by literally preventing the use of #Screenreader-friendly browsers such as #Lynx and #dillo to work, blocking @torproject / #Tor users and explicitly banning the use of it's #API to build better clients.

My brother got hit by a car on his bicycle when he was 16, he was still on the side of the road when I got there, I rode with him in the ambulance, I took him to physical therapy for a year when my mom was busy. He had rods in his leg for I don’t even know how long.

He was at fault for the accident because he was just a kid late for football practice and he didn’t stop at the apartment complex entrance before he crossed the street, and it was traumatic for all of us. I didn’t ride my bike on the road after that for years, and I would only do it in select locations forever after.

Just like someone can be unknowingly or unintentionally racist, someone can be unknowingly or unintentionally #ableist (can be due to being misinformed, etc) Being anti-ableist requires being intentional & challenging subconscious beliefs, and will result in observable changes in behaviour 🧵1/3
