1. Develop a public position statement within 60 days recognizing that jails are not the appropriate environment for those with significant mental health issues.
2. Take immediate steps to make sure anyone suffering an acute mental health crisis in custody is admitted to hospital for assessment and, where appropriate, treatment.
3. Adopt a principle of equivalence so that those in custody receive equal quality health care as they would outside.
4. Develop a committee to ensure the inquest's recommendations are properly considered and any responses fully reported on.
5. Establish an independent provincial corrections inspectorate."

On January 12, 2025, Jennifer Black visited Berlin and reported on her book “Beneath The Mountain”, co-published with political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal, which has collected authors from over 200 years of struggle against slavery and prisons in the USA.
Based on this work, she describes the current prison abolitionism in the USA.

see, this is something that's been on my mind lately... to call this modern american authoritarian movement "fascist" is inaccurate. It shares a few aesthetic similarities, shares some ideology, but calling it that gets the order of inheritance wrong. The fascists were inspired by America, not the other way around. Mussolini and Hitler looked up to the Americans, who could do what the Nazis couldn't: kill a hundred million people to their face, shooting or stabbing or strangling or drowning and raping their women and children (the Germans couldn't stomach that, hence the gas chambers). To fold fascist ideology back into that creates a synthesis, not an evolution. America isn't fascist, it's foundation is a settler-colonial slave nation, and any authoritarian swing will tend towards those roots. Of course it only makes sense that our modern authoritarian swing would dig deep into our roots as a nation built on slavery.
